Closing the only open tab closes the entire browser window
-
In prior versions of Vivaldi, when the only open tab was closed, a new Speed Dial tab was automatically created in its place. The current behavior has changed so that closing the last tab closes the entire browser window. From a UX perspective this doesn't make sense because there is already a red close button for the window, and a separate close button on the tab. It does make sense that sometimes the tab close button would close only a tab and other times it would close the entire window. It makes logical sense for the close button on tabs to only affect tabs and the window close button to close the window. Currently, if I'm done with the current tab, I have to click to open a new tab first and then close the previous tab. I really dislike this UI change and wish that, at the very least, it be added back as an option.

That's the way it should work, and the way it works on every other browser…
You could have a second windows open and just want to close it. You're right there's a red close button, but what would you do with a user who chooses command-W to close the tab?

I agree with cyrano, Command-W should definitely close the window if there is only a single tab left in it, and the same should probably be true for clicking the tab close button, because both of those behaviors are how all other browsers behave.
Unfortunately, in 1.0.418.3 (which is what I am currently using) and some previous versions, Command-W does nothing when you try to close the last tab in a window, which is a bit annoying.

I hate this "feature"
In Firefox you can disable it in about:config settings:
browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab (value:false) -

browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab (value:false)This is exactly why I loved Opera over Chrome/Firefox was that it kept the browser open. At the very least we should get the option to keep the browser window open.
Also, there's a bug where the Close Tab menu option and keyboard shortcut won't close the last tab, but clicking the X will.

But in the latest snapshots there is not such a problem. I remember only earliest builds had this bug.

At least Firefox has about:config options -
I use middle mouse button to close tabs. I want to be able to close the whole window when middle clicking the last tab. Could this feature/option be added?
