Google Keep Extension - Sign In Issue
-
After installing Google Keep extension I am asked to sign in to Keep in order to use the extension. But the link is frozen and does not let me sign in. The fact is, I am already signed into Google services in my system environment. Same scenario still occurs after removing and reinstalling the extension. In Chrome, not a problem. I'll have to resort to Chrome then temporarily as I rely on transferring data from websites to Chrome to have the data available across devices.
Another issue is with the extension Highlighter. ( t.ly/YS4t ) I use this extension to highlight text on webpages to save to Keep. There is a default shortcut key (Alt+H) to highlight selected text. This shortcut conflicts with Vivaldi's Help shortcut. Not a problem. I can reassign a new shortcut of my choosing. However, no matter what I assign to Highlighter as an alternative shortcut, no assignment works. Again, in Google Chrome, it works fine.

@tokyojerry
Hi, I use Keep in a web panel but I test the extension now.
I cant sign in but I am in allready, I am logged in in Google with Vivaldi.
I can add a note and it sync with my Keep panel but only for the first time.
Some extensions are simply not work with Vivaldi, I fear.
I guess Google will not fix it on there side but you can make a bug report to the Vivaldi developer.https://help.vivaldi.com/article/reporting-a-bug-in-vivaldi/
For Highlighter I would contact the developer and when they say it is a Vivaldi problem you can report, too.
Sometimes the extension developer get in contact with Vivaldi and work together for a fix.Cheers, mib

@tokyojerry A workaround for you to try. (provided by Vivaldi team member)
Open Keep in a new tab
Goto Bookmark bar.
Right click (context menu)
Click 1st option <Add Active Tab>
Shortcut will be added in leftmost position on Bookmark bar (you can rename it &/or move it)
Click
If you don't like it that way
While Keep is in main window
Click on <+> in Panel
Add Keep
<Enter>
Keep will load in Panel -
@tokyojerry Try "Super Simple Highlighter"
-
@janrif I think I have tried "Super Simple Highligter" in the past but uninstalled it for some forgotten reason. I will revisit the extension again. The highlighter extension I use I like it because I can highlight several items on a web page, then click on the extension's icon to Copy ALL highlighted items at one time and then save to Google Keep. But unfortunately Google Keep right click context menu does not work properly in Vivaldi. Highlighter also allows color-coding highlights and attach notes to highlights as well. But I will take a look at your suggestion once again. Thanks.

@janrif Thanks for your suggestion. I already have Google Keep in my bookmarks bar. That is not my problem. The problem is, the right click, context sensitive menu item for Google Keep.
When I visit a website, and select some text or image, right-click and select 'send to Google Keep, the subsequent dialogue instructs me to sign in. (image) But, I am already signed in. When I click to sign in, the dialogue window freezes. Does nothing. I have to refresh the browser page to get it back to normal. Again, the right-click context sensitive menu item for Google Keep is the problem, not trying to position it on the bookmarks bar. That isn't a problem. -
@mib2berlin Hi. Thanks for your suggestion. I will submit a bug report to the dewelopers of Vivaldi. I don't have a problem with Google Keep in Chrome, just Vivaldi. See my response below to @janrif regard the problem with the right-click context sensitive menu entry for 'Save to Google Keep'.

I can confirm this behavior as well.

@tokyojerry out of curiosity.... what's your advantage to using "Keep" over Vivaldi Notes? Both have similar functions, no?
-
Unfortunately the Google Keep extension does not work in Vivaldi.
It doesn't use the usual Google Account web login (GMail, YouTube etc.), but a browser login (like how you'd be logged in when using sync in Chrome, for example).
The short version is that they use an API that requires Vivaldi to be built with information that in turn would enable other Google Account functionality that is undesirable. So unless Google changes how this works, we will not be fixing this, sorry to say.

As for the other issue, we are aware of some issues with keyboard shortcuts for extensions. Have not tested this particular one, but there are a few things that might help:
- Set the shortcuts to 'Global' (Tools > Extensions > Keyboard shortcuts)
- If you edit/create a keyboard shortcut, restart the browser if it doesn't work at first
-
@ingeb Thanks much for that clarification. I appreciate it. At least it confirms I am not doing something wrong.

@janrif (1) The ability to attach tags, keywords (similar in Pocket too). When I open Google Keep, I can simply type a tag or a keyword to pull up all notes relative to such tag or keyword. Sometimes we can not recall where we placed something in a hierarchical folder structure.
(2) Being a part of the Google ecosystem which I am deeply entrenched in, the ubiquity of being able to access all these notes syncronized and accessible across multiple devices whether at home or OTG
Yes, I see there is this notes function and in all honesty being relatively new to Vivaldi I have not yet completely switched over to it yet as my 'go to' browser, but I do like what I see so far. I need to check Vivaldi's note-taking function for awhile longer and more thoroughly before using that in lieu of Google Keep. I like what I see so far.
Two enhancements I'd like to see would be (1) the ability to open up notes in a tab like Keep, so that I could work in Notes full screen and (2) being able to add audio clip/comments or even video clips using a web camera. A tabbed version of Notes similar to Microsoft's OneNote or the Chrome extension 'Note Board' would be really awesome to be able to work with my notes in full screen especially if tabbed notebooks and drag and drop layouts were possible.

@ingeb Thanks for these tips. I've tried both but to no avail. Thanks. Highlighter extension: https://tinyurl.com/yhzlgwpy

You can try opening vivaldi://notes in its own tab?
If you search for Notes here in the Forum, you'll likely find many posts with tricks people use with them or shortcomings that they still have.
One of the biggest shortcomings, in my view, and that makes it impossible for me to completely migrate to Vivaldi's Notes instead of others like Keep is that Vivaldi's only syncs the text part of the note, but any attachments the note may have (like images) are not sync'd (yet) -
