speech to text fails
-
the https://dictation.io that google offers works fine on chromium.
however, it doesn't on vivaldi and i keep getting an error:
"Please ensure you are connected to the Internet?"
(which is weird because how does it think i got there in the first place.)dictation into google docs works on chromium, but not on vivaldi.
is there some setting i need to change to have vivaldi use google dictation ... or any other online one i've tried so far:
https://speechnotes.co/
https://www.speechtexter.com/
https://voicenotebook.com/all three of these work on chromium though!
fyi, i'm on archlinux and neither stable|snapshot are successful at using these sites.

@pradagio Did you disable any google services in settings? Does the page work in Firefox?
Did you try in guest mode?
-
all google services and extensions in settings are checked.
guest mode does the same thing:- the start-stop keep alternating
- doesn't accept dictation
- the same error message about having an internet connection.
the interesting thing is that i have been able to make dictation work using pulseaudio feeding speech from a recording into the dictation.io setup, however, i can't do it with the microphone on vivaldi (here or any other dictation site i've tried).
that would suggest that vivaldi and my mic are not cooperating whereas chromium and my mic are.
didn't try firefox, but midori doesn't accept dictation and snapshot does the same thing as stable with vivaldi.
the curious thing is that the microphone does work through vivaldi on a test such as here:
https://www.onlinemictest.comEDIT:
so the problem may be that you have to have chrome or chromium for this to work at least with dictation.iohowever, this doesn't explain why the other sites didn't work unless they are actually using dictation.io too (but not saying so).

@pradagio If I am not mistaken this is a service that requires payments to be made to Google.
-
It doesn't work in chromium browser (Linux) either.
-
@pradagio I will try later. Could you please test with FF or another non-google browser?
-
@gwen-dragon Yes, but these are within websites, unless they are trying to call a browser API it should work.
-
I tried another similar addon called
Speech to Text
.
This addon doesn't work properly either. Clicking on the micro-button should change it's color from blue to red and the recording starts.
But in Vivaldi the color immediately flips back to blue and the recording isended
.EDIT// And with this tool I get
Network Error
. -
Jumping in to simply add that this is a major accessibility issue that Vivaldi team needs to address. I work in disability services in higher ed and I cannot recommend vivaldi to students because of this.

@catweazle said in speech to text fails:
@pradagio , work this one for you?
Edit: Don't
no it didn't - i got
Error: Networkthx to everyone for the replies.
(sorry i didn't get back to this sooner).i can understand that google dictation would be an issue unless on chromium (where i works fine for me), but why the other sites, unless they are all working through google dictation too.
