Screen tearing/flicker
-
Hi! I am having issues where Vivaldi tears/flickers entirely when playing media, which is Exhausting. I found a thread that solved it for Windows users, but I'm using macOS Catalina. I would really like to not have to upgrade to Big Sur if I can help it due to the security issues that Big Sur has. (One of the Windows solutions was to update Windows.) Included are my macOS's specs.

What version of Vivaldi? Do you have hardware acceleration on?
Big Sur did have security updates recently as did 10.15.7

I'm also seeing a large amount of flicker since updating to 3.8.2259.40. Commonly seems to be when lots of repainting is going on, but even on this forum page, seems to be intermittently flickering whilst writing this comment.
What's also interesting is I have my tab bar attached to the left hand side of the UI. The flickering includes the tabs, but not the left UI panel, or the address bar.
I'm running Big Sur 11.3 on a MBP 15" 2019 with Radeon 560X 4GB connected to an ultrawide monitor running at 100HZ.
It's almost like the div is being redrawn and the rest of the view is temporarily discarded:

@latitude said in Screen tearing/flicker:
Windows
I'm on Windows (with an Nvidia graphic card) and i have a similar problem.
Ex:
I've tried everything: deactivate modules, new profil, modification of v-sync/g-sync on my graphic card drivers, update to the snapshot v.3.9.2289.3. etc.. no result.
Disable Hardware acceleration work, but for me it's not a solution
So, i downgraded Vivaldi (v3.8.2259.42) to the last version of the v.3.7.2218.58 and the the problem is no longer present. -
@harrygc Interestingly, I can no longer reproduce this behaviour.

Back again with a vengance in the most recent update (4.0.2312.27 (Stable channel) (x86_64)). Been running off my inbuilt screen for most of today and it's been very noticable, and persisted after restarting the browser.

A lot of flickering here as well in more recent versions.
Quite often on pages with video - YouTube and Netflix, but it's becoming more often even on static pages.
Confirmed on latest (4.x) Vivaldi on Macbook Pro from 2015 and a completely new one from 2019. Also, a friend using Pro from 2019 has same issues and has moved away from Vivaldi due to those problems.
It's very unpleasant and very negatively affects the UX.

@abstractalgorithm Happening on BigSur 11.3 and 11.4.

So after switching to new Macbook Pro (2019, now on BigSure 11.4), I expected much better performance, and I'm really dissatisfied with the state of things - I've opened multiple websites on regular Chrome (91.x) and latest Vivaldi, the perf and UX is night-and-day, Chrome doesn't flicker nor does it display blank parts of the page when scrolling. If I scroll fast enough in Vivaldi, even very lightweight pages (my blog with ~20 lines of css and very flat html) have a more than noticeable delay until the content is rendered into view. Basically, I feel like my browser or my computer is falling apart, and I don't get the feeling with regular Chrome.
I played with some ://flags to try to maybe improve things but to no avail. Any quick tip for this, as this seems systemic for Macs at this point (not sure about other OSs).

I've also been seeing a lot of flicker for the past few weeks. I was on Catalina until upgrading to Big Sur a week ago. It happens whenever there's high CPU usage from Vivaldi or other applications. The entire window seems to flicker, not just the page.

This has been progressively getting worse and worse for some reason.
I've seen pages rendered like some badly decoded video frames - blocks of page rasterised in places where they shouldn't be, or blank page.
Scrolling is really sluggish.
Both the parts of the Vivaldi's UI flicker, and the parts of the page itself.
Opening DevTools feels like a Herculean effort.
The latest encounter was where I lost control of the browser, it was just flickering and switching between two tabs, on its own, not responding to any input.
For the previous few days (since I first wrote here), I was testing Chrome and Brave as alternatives for a few hours per day - they don't have any of the mentioned issues. This leads me to a safe conclusion that it's not the hardware of my machine or any of the extensions, but the browser itself.
Currently, Vivaldi is not usable for me anymore and I will be switching to some alternative until I see fixes regarding these things in the changelog.

I wonder if all the HTML/CSS/etc that Vivaldi adds to the base Chromium code to customize the UI "shell" around Chromium is responsible for that.
I wonder if they can isolate the UI "shell" from the "active content renderer" into a completely separate process, and if that would help.

Vivaldi is great productivity-wise but the flicker/clipping makes it's almost impossible to use sometimes.
I recorded how it looks for me, and recording is showing this in very little scale, I mean, for me it's usually much more intensive, tends to be worse with more tabs open.

Side note Apple is close to releasing macOS 11.5
For this with tearing is it any different with hardware acceleration on and off?
-
@chas4 Disabling hardware acceleration fixes it. Any chance this will be fixed for good soon?
-
@jjaarreekk Should get fixed, have you make a bug report yet with what you have found?
-
There is a recent Vivaldi update https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/minor-update-6-for-desktop-4-0/ with just a Chromium update (with security fixes) not sure if that will improve anything but can try.
-
I have the same issue with the flickering tabs on Windows, no mac involved. Latest update has not fixed it.
Current workarounds for me (each one is separate and dont need to combine them).
- Disable hardware acceleration in Vivaldi (or Windows completely)
- Set all monitors to 60 Hz
- Change Windows background image from an image or slideshow to a solid colour
-
@saibork Might need to install Microsoft Updates (in the optional updates there might be a GPU driver update)
-
@chas4 There are no GPU updates, I've tried the last several drivers for GPU and they all have it.
