Extension as start page
-
It's been several years since this issue was raised, and I'm pretty sure someone on the Vivaldi team acknowledged that it is an issue and said it would be addressed in a future release.
The issue is this: I prefer the extension Speed Dial 2 New Tab over the default start page. I can set it as the new tab page and as the home page, and it works there. But, when I set it as the start page, Vivaldi ignores this and starts with the default start page. I've tried various things that I thought would be workarounds (like setting the start page to vivaldi://newtab) but I haven't yet found a solution.
Can someone tell me if a fix will ever be in the works?
(I'd look it up in Vivaldi's bug management system, but the Vivaldi team keeps that a secret.)

@FloridaMatt Hey, I just tested it and it is working fine. Vivaldi is starting with Speed Dial 2.
Have you copied and pasted the URL of the extension into the settings?
Have you the latest version of Vivaldi?
What operating system you are on? -
I'm in 3.6.2165.32 because I'm avoiding 2202.3 due to the link right-click bug.
MacOS 11.2.1 (Big Sur)
reviewing this, with the start page set the extension (instead of vivaldi://newtab), Vivaldi starts correctly with Speed Dial 2. But, if I close the Vivaldi window (e.g. click the red dot) but do not quit vivaldi, then going back to Vivaldi (by clicking its icon/app), it then gives me the Vivaldi start page.

@FloridaMatt I'm sorry I deinstalled it after success and now - with new installed extension - it is not the same.
The URL of it doesn't work and I couldn't find a tutorial.
Can't help you further, sorry.
I hope you'll get the right info soon.BTW: You could try it with the latest stable 3.6.2165.40.

I am having a similar problem with configuring the "start page" and "new tab"
I have 3 machines running Vivaldi, allegedly synced, but only one operates correctly where the start page and new tab are both controlled by the extension Toby. The only place where start page and new tab function correctly is on a MacBook Air running Big Sur.
The second machine is also a MacBook Air, but running Mojave. The funny thing is that the Tab -> New Tab Page -> Start Page -> "Controlled by Extension" is grayed out. The box is checked, but grayed out. When I open a new tab, I get the default Vivaldi Start Page, not Toby.
The third machine is an Unbuntu Linux 18.04 box. The Tab -> New Tab Page -> Start Page -> "Controlled by Extension" is grayed out also. The box is checked, but grayed out. When I open a new tab, I get the default Vivaldi Start Page, not Toby.
Maybe I should try FVD or some other browser extension as this is really consuming me.

@dadalo While I was running Firefox I used FVD for a very long time, until I recognized that this extension is slowing down Firefox-start heavily.
So I switched to the inbuilt speeddial that isn't the same by far, but made the start much quicker. Now - with Vivaldi - I not even tried any of these extensions to have little advantage of them.
I'm happy just to have the inbuilt speed-dial that is by far better than that of Firefox. If you miss any feature within this speeddial you're free to make a request and maybe get some modification-code for it.
In short: I wouldn't let myself be consumed by this issue.

@Dancer, I dont like the terrible Vivaldi express-panel and prefer to use FDV Speed Dial. But since version 5.4 Vivaldi doesnt load chrome://newtab (controlled by extension) as start page. Thats why I have rollback to 5.3 and prohibit browser updates. I dont need thear window panel and other "new features" but only want refund to lost old abilities.
