Certain Extensions cause Vivaldi to Freeze {NoScript + user defined theme}
-
Certain extensions seems to cause Vivaldi to completely freeze. Once installed they cause it to become unresponsive, and have to terminate the process in order to get it to close. I know for a fact that NoScript and privacy Tweaks cause this issue, because if I disable them the issue does not present itself. However, if I enable them (one at a time) either one will cause the issue. I am assuming the issue is more fundamental, and not relating to the specific extensions because the freezing happens with more than one addon. However, I cannot for the life of me see what it could be. I am using version 3.6.2165.26 on Windows 10 x64. This version, as have several before, has the issue. I don't believe it to be related to Chrome 88, because up to date versions of Chrome and Brave do not seem to be effected.
Anyone else experience this?

@n8chavez Hi, I just tried installing both extensions in a clean profile of:
3.6.2165.32 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Windows 10 OS Version 2009 (Build 19042.746)
I have not experienced any freezes when opening a few test pages.
You need to be more specific in your description of how to reproduce the issue.
Please go through the basic troubleshooting steps first:

Hello,
I'm also having this issue.
I'm on linux.
For an unrelated issue , I've completely reinstalled vivaldi 3.6.2165.34 (Stable channel) (64 bits) (the reinstall didn't fix the my unrelated problem)Noscript extension was also reinstalled with default settings.
When I restart vivaldi (because it was frozen), disable noscript, load pages, the freeze problem is no longer there.
All other extensions are disabled and only noscript is used. So It doesn't seem to be a combination/mix of active extensions.Going at https://www.crazygames.com/game/cannon-balls-3d with noscript enabled causes the freeze every single time.
Didn't happen with vivaldi 3.5. Maybe incompatibility with 3.6 and noscript?

Hi,
i noticed the same problem with NoScript when I updated to Vivaldi 3.6.
3.6.2165.34 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
240ce41835957243f3c94b0b857c0f4344bcecd3
Windows 10 OS Version 1909 (Build 18363.1316)Almost every Microsoft website crashes the browser immediatly, for example this one:
https://support.microsoft.com/de-atYoutube however doesn't crash the browser, but the page won't load even if I disable all restrictions. When I disable NoScript everything works as normal. At the same time all these sites work perfectly fine in Firefox with the same version of NoScript (11.2).

@fofo @spookyduck Have you guys gone through the troubleshooting steps?
Have you tested in a clean profile?
Like I said earlier, I cannot reproduce it here on a clean profile so my guess it's something in your profiles causing this issue
-
@Pathduck Thanks for answering, I did most of the troubleshooting, but I thought I had found the reason after I disabled NoScript. Now I did some further testing using a clean profile and some more research in the forum also. It seems, other users have similar problems when using the dark theme. First I wasn't able to reproduce the problem, so I tried different themes and everything was working fine. Then I rebuild my custom dark theme and the problems started again but only in combination with NoScript. So there are two possibilities to fix this problem:
- Either disabling NoScript
- or switching to one of the standard themes
This way the browser doesn't crash anymore. However, Youtube still wouldn't load proberly, but this was fixed simply by deleting and reinstalling NoScript. I hope this will help.

@spookyduck Thanks for taking the time to do proper troubleshooting
I have also noticed some users saying a "dark" theme will cause hangs. It would be interesting to try to reproduce.
What are your custom theme settings?
-
@spookyduck Just did some more testing and it turned out that the problem with Youtube wasn't solved. For some reasons I had to allow webgl for youtube.com in NoScript which I wasn't really expecting because I didn't mess around with any of these settings in the last time. But it seems this wasn't a browserrelated issue.
-
@Pathduck Thanks again for your quick answere, here are my custom theme settings.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Do you have NoScript enabled and did you try the website I linked above? I've also read that some users have similar issues depending on if they have the standard app mode in Win10 set to dark or light, however, I was able to reproduce the freezing with both, light and dark app mode.
-
@spookyduck Thanks for the information. I was able to reproduce with these colours.
It must be one of the strangest bugs I've encountered - an extension combined with a dark theme causes the
App: Vivaldi
UI process to hang completely. Apparently, once the background gets "dark enough" it starts hanging. I tried some different values and only the darkest ones caused a hangI'm sure the developers will be able to reproduce it once a bug is properly reported with all the necessary parameters:
https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/
Really sucks that such a bug should make it into Stable. I suspect a quick fix will come.@Gwen-Dragon It's in combination with NoScript being installed - and maybe specific pages.

@Pathduck Thanks for your help, I'm trying to fill the bugreport but I'm struggling. I don't know where to find the crash log, maybe you could help?

I don't think there's a crash log if you had to terminate the process. If there is one, it should be in
AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Crashpad\reports
but make sure the timestamp matches the actual time of the crash (might be older crashes logged there).Just write out the report as detailed as you're able, with a step-by-step description on how to reproduce. When writing it up it's a good idea to work in a clean profile so you know the exact way to do it from scratch.

I'll chime in that my Windows 10 v3.6 with AdGuard as the single only extension is likewise causing a UI "freeze" on Netflix. I ran the update this Sunday morning, and so long as the extension is enabled, Netflix completely locks up. Disabling the add on restores site functionality.
My kids haven't let me try anything else, but I too utilize a dark theme. Based on the number of other recent comments here it looks like something is definitely "off" with the latest version and extensions.
EDIT Seems to be confirmed after additional testing. With AdGuard enabled and in the default light 'Vivaldi' theme, Netflix works great. But the instant I toggle to a custom dark theme, the browser UI completely locks up. Have submitted VB-76545

@spookyduck Was a bug report created?
I have the same issue I think since Vivaldi 3.6/3.7 and now still in 4.1.2369.21 (Stable channel) (32-Bit).If there is a bugitem or discussion where this issue is tracked and discussed, I would like to participate, since I have the problem still afer a clean install without any extensions. From my investigations its related to the custom theme, but not caused by specific colours. I only remove teh checkboxes for the accent color in the Vivaldi light/standard theme.
