Google Mail Log-in..... not

@Gwen-Dragon I guess I should give up trying for a while.....

I tested it few minutes ago. As @legobuilder26 wrote I had to "Allow less secure apps" within my "Google-account" >security.
Then it was easy to create the gmail-account by using password.I did too but I was un-successful. If you have the time, maybe you could illustrate the steps you took to make it happen.

Maybe you can skip the first 8 steps (that I did) and just click on your Google-account and proceed with step 9:
- login into gmail.com
- click on settings (gear wheel in right top corner)
- click on "open all settings" (or similar - my language is german) = andvanced settings
- in tab "General" click on tab for POP/IMAP
- Scroll down, last entry = configure email-client (0utlook, Thunderbird...) and click on "config-tutorial"
- Scroll down to "troubleshooting" and click on "I can't login at my Email-client
- In Step 2, second paragraph click on the link "App-password"
- In the 3rd paragraph click on "Google-account"
- In your account click on the 4th tab "security", scroll down to the chapter "Access by less secure apps" and click on it.
- Enable it by clicking on the right button.

Thank you for this information. I do have 2 part security so I tried to follow along opdtion 1 but still could not make it work for me. Maybe I don't understand the words "App-Specific Password". It's not the PW for the Gmail Account so what is it, exactly? The PW window is looking for a 16 digit PW of some sort. After making a number of attempts, Google has locked me out of my main Gmail account & I have to wait 48 hours before I can get back in.

It IS the password for the gmail account. At least here it is. But I don't have 2FA, so I don't know how that would be different.

@Ayespy OK Thank you. That's what I thought. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. Reading through this thread it seems to work for a new account but not for an existing account. After multiple tries, varies ways, with nothing working but too many tries to access my main email account, Google locked me out for 48 hours.
I hope this problem is simplified & made functional wherever the changes have to be made. But thanks to all who helped along. It is much appreciated.

I don't know if it has been commented, but just in case, look in the Gmail settings, if you have access to read pop / imap mail.
In the capture it looks like it should be activated (it is in Spanish, but I think it is illustrative)

@legobuilder26 The recommended answer is something I thought would work for everyone too. And since it works on a new mail account there's something odd going on (I'm guessing bug in old Gmail settings, but I could be wrong)
The OAuth thing is just something they're taking ages with accepting us as a 'Secure App' (the code works, they just block any more than the first 100 users). Still waiting on that one
@janrifkinson Yes, the option 2, (using Less Secure App, no 2 factor authentication, and not the App Password) is just typing in your normal password. I have no idea why it doesn't work for you (I'm guessing an old bug in their Gmail settings). Hopefully OAuth stuff will be accepted soon (that should work no problem).

Seems like Oauth might be working now finally
Could you try Oauth @janrifkinson ? -
@gmg working! Tks for follow up.
