Home page search bar doesn't work as expected
-
Vivaldi for Windows.
Hello,
In my opinion there are few issues with the search bar on home page:
- There are no suggestions while typing the query.
- If I'll write something in the search bar, change the tab and return, the search bar will be empty.
- The suggestions of my old queries are not needed and it works weird - clicking outside of the bar doesn't close the dropdown and if there are no old queries it just does nothing and a new user doesn't know what's this for.
- Also the search bar is focused on opening the new tab. I would expect for browser to focus the address bar. It's more common to start inputting the page address not a search query. There is a switch in the options, but it should be a default setting.
It would be nice to be fixed as it is the main view of the browser.

@ap0st0l Sure, it can be improved and some bugs fixed, if you feel something is a bug feel free to report it as such:
https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/As for your points:
- This is in Settings > Search > Allow suggestions in search field. By default unchecked, because "privacy" I guess.
- Yes, this is definitely something to be reported.
- Not sure about this one. Are you saying it remembers previous searches? How does it look? It might be the Autofill kicking in, but AFAIK it shouldn't remember there.
- This is in Settings > Tabs > Focus page content on new tab. By default unchecked and so it should focus the URL bar. If not that's a bug*
* There is a known bug with the very first tab after startup where input focus is neither on the URL bar or the page. But only the first tab. Should be fixed soon I hope.

@Pathduck Hey, I really appreciate your response. But my point is not to only help myself find what to change in settings at the moment, but make this browser better by changing the default settings for all users. I hope some developer will read that
For your good points:
-
And I also had to input the Google's suggestion URL, because there is none. It could be also better solved by making a simple checkbox. My father would never know what to change to make it work better.

Dropdown on the right shows my old searches

Yes, you are right and I think it should be like that by default as in any other browser
Thanks for your help

But if your "new tab" is a search, then it makes sense to focus on the search field.
Consider if your "new tab" is set to Google/Bing etc. Then you would want the field to be focused! As Speed Dial has a search fiels, it should be focussed.
Note: If this is not wanted, you could remove the search field in settings!

@TbGbe I guess this is a personal preference, because I don't agree. Option should be based on majority preference and there is no other browser which I know about that works that way... The address bar is always focused on the new tab, because what do you mainly want to do while opening a new tab? Of course open another website. If not, you can search directly via the address bar...

Correct, that is why there is a setting for it.
In early days, Vivaldi did as you suggest; but there were a lot of people asking for the search field to be focused, so it was changed and the setting introduced! -
