Are there plans for email notification?
-
Currently with google calendar I use emails to alert me. I'll get a summary for the day at the top of the morning, and then individual alerts if they are set as the time approaches.
I find this valuable, because the reminder remains in my inbox, whereas a system alert will get covered over or dismissed, and then possibly forgotten.
Otherwise I like the calendar. I like the ability to create events in a one-page dialog rather than a dialog with many tabs.

@paul1149 Thank you for testing Vivaldi Calendar and I'm glad to hear you have an overall positive experience.
We have discussed email notifications a little. For them to be reliably delivered there needs to be a server that has the event data (or at least information about the alerts) to send the emails.
Calendar servers vary with their setup and how they handle this. You should f.ex. be able to use Vivaldi built in Calendar client to manage the events and have it sync to a calendar server (f.ex. google) which should then send alerts if they are set up. Not actually sure if that has been tested to work but it should do. Our own vivaldi.net caldav server is a bit limited at the moment with regards to sending emails but I personally think it would be good to have such functionality there.
If you are using only local calendar in Vivaldi Calendar then it is a little trickier, but given that there is a mail account set up and Vivaldi is running at the alarm time it could be done. I am sure that for some users that might be a good solution, but for others it might be a little confusing.
So to answer the question It has been discussed but is not on the immediate plan to implement. I'm sure we will address it in some way sooner or later, since it is a very useful thing in some cases.

@eggert I see. Thanks for that very clear analysis. It actually hadn't occurred to me that the cal data was local so sending mail might be a problem.
I'm not clear on how I'm going to approach this, as it looks like I will be continuing to use Thunderbird, or perhaps kmail if it gets fixed. I might use the v.net calendar along with my email there.
Be well.

I'd like to bump this up a bit again. Google Calendar is removing Reminders (they say now that they are shifting it to GTasks but too me it appears like moving aka playing around). Pretty hard to find a replacement.
BTW, if you'd ever go about this, pls consider that mailing reminders is useful not only to reminder yourself but also others, like participants of a scheduled meeting, etc
TNX for listening -
Yandex, Proton and Mail.ru all serve email reminders and Yandex also serves SMS. Yandex is a good browser, so their calendar is also a function of their browser ecosystem. And Yandex cal easily links with other cals such as Apple Calendar. Google is not* the standard for anything any longer. I am truly amazed that such a good browser like Vivaldi isn't incorporating such in their cal, but perhaps it's a security risk. That I can understand. I want to use Vivaldi cal but without email notifications I could miss appointments. It would be a very key feature to have though, and being able to notify participants of a meeting. Otherwise the Vivaldi cal is very limited in its functionality.

@DJLConsulting
Hi, you can send mails for an event but the participant have to be in your contacts:
I am not really understand how it work because the participant get the mail when the event is created.
May you check this out, I never use email notification.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin that looks like adding participants and not email or sms reminder notifications of an event
-
@DJLConsulting
Haha, yes it is a complete different feature, as I check the mails now you can reply if you like or decline the event.
But if the calendar can send mails already it should be an easy task to add mail notification.
I will check if there is a feature request about.Cheers, mib
EDIT: Found yours, up voted! -
@mib2berlin @DJLConsulting Email notifications is something that we have discussed but we have no decision on what to do in that regard.
Problem with sending notifications is that to be reliable they will need to be sent from a server and depending on users needs / preferences having the calendar data on a server may or may not be desirable.
- We could of course let Vivaldi send out notifications if it is running at the time, same as it does send mails for event invites. That would however not work if the browser is not running on time of notification.
- Another option would be to have a dedicated server sending notifications, that should work in all cases when Vivaldi has had a chance to send info to the server of reminders. This comes with above mentioned privacy concerns, but should not be a big deal since it would always be opt-in for users. Also requires running of said server.
- Third option, and the only one available now, is to use Vivaldi as a client to a calendar server that already sends email notifications, like f.ex. Google or Yandex. I must admit I do not know if vivaldi.net calendar server has that, or if not how much effort that would be to implement.
As you can see we have given it thought and have options, just nothing planned at the moment and with limited resources I can unfortunately not promise any timeframe for improvements on this.

Oh, I should have read the thread before answering, since I pretty much had the same answer above. In any case you have an update on the status that it is pretty much the same still
Happy holidays!
