Vivaldi detected as malware {could not reinstall}
-
Hi,
I updated yesterday 9th December 2020 my Vivaldi Version - I think I am on a beta channel. After that Vivaldi is detetced as a malware from my Security suite (Hitman Pro).
The installation was for the local user only on a win 10 machine 64bit with all the latest update.
Ok, so I tried uninstall Vivaldi, but this was not successful.
Than I tried it hardcore and deleted the folder in the user directory, but kept the user data...Now I downloaded Vivaldi from the web site and tried to reinstall. But for some reason the installer is now telling me that a newer Version from vivaldi is already installed, I should uninstall it and try again.
Ok, now I have "deadlock".
Please advice how I can reinstall Vivaldi now.
Best regards,
dingolino

@dingolino Please close all Vivaldi (check with Taskmanager).
Start Regedit and check Windows Registry for key:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Vivaldi
Delete the completeVivaldi
key in left tree.
Install Vivaldi for User. Thanks a lot for your quick reply!
I found another solution:
I downloaded the latest snapshot and than the installation was working, because the Version number was higher ...I think it could make sense to allow a "forced installation" no matter which version is stored in the registry. And why it is "forbidden" to install a "older" Version over a "newer" Version?
Looks like that I had a "unlucky" situation.
by the way I got no "security" complains from the latest snapshot Version.

Please report that to Hitman support [email protected] and tell them their "security" software breaks Vivaldi installer.
I think this was done allready automatically because while scanning my system with hitman I saw that hitman uploaded a number of files from the Vivaldi Directory. This was yesterday and today I reinstalled the newest snapshot, which was working. I have not got a hitman allert since 2 years or maybe even longer, the normal situation is that it delets all the collected cookies, but real malware not that I remember.
By the way, in the Vivaldi help tab and the about menue with the Version number you could make it a little easier and add a "copy to clipboard" button which is not including any user data, such as path names, etc.
Like FreeCAD for example, please see attached picture.
This is quite handy for me the user and for you the developer to realy get the neccessary version data you would like to have.
Just a thought.
