1Password7 extension communication with OS
-
I tried to find an answer a while back, but none of the suggested solutions did work for me.
Vivaldi remain mostly idle, collecting dust on my launcher.
The 1Password7 extension is supposed to be communicating with the 1Password App in Mac OSX. Logging in to 1Password in Mac OS once pr. session and it should work when opening any browser. It works fine in Safari and tested with Chrome, even if I am definitely not a Chrome fan.
I log in to 1Password on my Mac when I start a session and use Safari only for the streamline feeling Mac/Safari gives.
Vivaldi has many great features except this little nag 1Password7 not communicating with the OS. Often I just leave it there alone in the launcher due to that fact.
Now, to the issue:
Does anyone out there know a fix or is this a software problem that should be reported to the developers? -

1Password
Are you using the same 1Password extension that you tested in Chrome?
-
@Chas4, Yes. 1Password7 extension.

1Password7
Does the extension have a 7 at the end of the name? Is this the one https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/1password-extension-deskt/aomjjhallfgjeglblehebfpbcfeobpgk you are using?
Their change log https://app-updates.agilebits.com/product_history/OPM7 also show an update recently (released 2020-11-16)

@Chas4 First: Thank you for trying to help, it must be frustrating with the half-assed presentation I first came up with.
I feel like a right fool here and I need to correct myself: It is the 1Password extension in Vivaldi that does not find the 1Password7 application on my Mac. When starting the extension I first get this:
And it will without fail respond with the message on the screenshot taken which is attached here:
I have tried to re-start my Mac and also "zapped the PRAM" but whatever I try the 1Password extension will not find the 1Password7 application in MacOSX. This problem have been persistent through two earlier OS's and now also in OS Big Sur.
Installing the 1PasswordX extension will have 1Password working, but I have to log in everytime I leave/re-open Vivaldi.
I know it's a small matter but still is an irritating little nag leaving me avoiding the use of Vivaldi as I frequently has to log into various sites and services and this is much easier using Safari. -
When you set it up in Chrome did you have to set any permissions for the extension to communicate with the app?
-
Confirming that this is also a problem for me, but only in Big Sur. Using latest version of everything on M1 MacBook Air. Works fine in Mojave on a desktop and a laptop.
-
@Chas4 I Can't remember I had to set up any permissions in Chrome, I just plugged in the extension from Chrome store, opened it and it found the desktop app right away.
-
Does it work if you update to Vivaldi 3.5?
-
@Chas4 No. I completely removed the old Vivaldi version and moved all Vivaldi Library/Application support files before re-starting Mac. Downloaded new Vivaldi version, installed but sorry, no.
-
@audunsvante There are known issues with 1Password 7 and Vivaldi Snapshots: https://1password.community/discussion/comment/562951/
However, according to other tickets, the 1Password team does support (and apparently does do some testing) with 1Password 7 on Stable releases. Have you reached out to them for assistance?
-
@xyzzy Thank you for the information. I will check out the links you provided and also reach out to 1Password team in case they may have a solution. In the meantime I will leave this open until I have found a solution, which of course will be stated here.
-
OK. My problem with 1Password extension in Vivaldi not communicating with 1Password7 app in Mac is solved.
After communicating with the agilebits (1Password) team I was offered this solution (cut/paste):"
-
Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
-
Copy and paste the following command and press Return:
mkdir -p ~/Library/Application\ Support/Google/Chrome
-
Open 1Password. Hold down the Control and Option keys on your keyboard and choose 1Password > Quit 1Password Completely from the menu bar.
-
Open 1Password again.
-
Restart your browser.
"
And that did it for me, Me Happy!
I wish You All as Merry a Christmas as can be in these weird times of pandemia.

-
@audunsvante I'm glad to hear that 1Password is working for you now. Thanks for the update! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas as well!
