Fans run fast while watching 4K youtube videos
-
When I watch hd or 4k youtube videos with 5-6 other tabs open with, macbook fans start to run fast. On mac fans control they seems like 6000 rpm. What should I do?

@Gwen-Dragon said in Fans run fast while watching youtube videos:
@ardatuna May be trouble with hardware acceleration.
Please read https://help.vivaldi.com/article/report-media-issues-with-mac resume examples and give us more information (written in article) and a URL where this happens.Ok, that is clear now. Thank you for your answer.

@Gwen-Dragon no. The problem is still continuing.
-
What macOS version and any example video urls?
-
@Chas4 mac os big sure lastest version.
Any 4k video. -
@ardatuna I also see it
Enya - Only Time (Official 4K Music Video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wfYIMyS_dI set to 4k and I see a CPU spike of around 260%
From the stats for nerds (in the right click on video)
Current / Optimal Res 3840x2160@25 / 3840x2160@25
Codecs: vp09.00.51.08.01.01.01.01.00 (313) / opus (251)Also on macOS 11.0.1 here

I suspect it is similar to how many years ago when 1080i/p videos were streaming (for the first few years that they were) it caused CPU spikes in all browsers.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I have already done that about 1 month ago. but still the same. I have to use safari for watching 4k videos until vivaldi team fix this issue (if they will).

this is cpu load while watching 4k youtube video with clean profile with no extensions. -
@ardatuna
Hi, this chart shows clearly your GPU is not supported.
My old Intel iGPU HD 4000 takes over 30-40% workload.
You can try to override the Chromium blacklist with the flag:
chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist
This is experimental and may cause other issues.
I don´t set this but use:
chrome://flags/#enable-accelerated-video-decode
You can also try this.Cheers, mib

I am a bit confused, what process manager is this, same as in your first post? This is Vivaldi task manager, my system need only 1.5 treads of my 4 threads dual core i7.
OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
KDE-Plasma-Version: 5.19.5
i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz 8 GiB
HD Graphics 4000
Vivaldi 3.5.2131.8/ Chrome 87.0.4280.88 -
It is macos task manager.
-
I am still waiting an update for this. I have to use safari to watch youtube videos.
-
@ardatuna Is one of the 4k videos Eyna Only Time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wfYIMyS_dI that you see the spike?
Right click on a video and select stats for nerds to see dropped frames
I see it in Safari on macOS 11.1 (had one dropped frame for the 4k video which is VP9 codec, and the tab was using around 1GB of RAM)
Current Stable Vivaldi has the same spike (had 4 dropped frames, minus the use of Apple's Metal, Vivaldi stable has a lot lower RAM usage around 400MB) both Safari and Vivaldi stable had a CPU spike around 200%
Vivaldi snapshot (strangely shows as Vivaldi tho with a grey icon in Activity Monitor), the CPU usage is about 20% less than Safari or Vivaldi stable to about 20% higher (8 dropped frames)
Safari gets mp4 for the audio while the Vivali's get opus for audio
These CPU spikes remind me of the same CPU spikes when 1080 quality first hit the web years ago (tho flash player was 2 to 3 times worse (also Flash Player is 10000% end of life now))
