Tab order broken in 3.5.2088.7 - fixed in 3.7.2209.3
-
Here's the full description of the bug I'm (still) experiencing (Vivaldi 3.5.2115.54 x64 on Windows 10):
- I have a Speed Dial folder with bookmarks 1, 2, 3, 4.
- I wheel-click the folder, which opens tabs 1, 2, 3, 4 next to the tab with Speed Dial (whenever I'm opening a whole folder at once, the Speed Dial tab is usually the only thing opened in this Vivaldi window)
- I close the Speed Dial tab
- Before this bug started happening, tab 1 would get focused, and when I closed that, tab 2, then 3 and then 4 would get focus. Since the bug, started happening, some builds focus tab 4 (and when it gets closed, tab 3, 2, 1 get focus), while other builds focus tab 1, but when tab 1 is closed, tab 4 gets focus, then 3, 2.

@ender85 What do you have selected in Settings, Tabs, Closed Tab Activation?
- With Activate in Recently Used Order, the last tab opened gains focus on closing the Start Page tab, which is as I expect.
- With Activate Right in Tab Order, they are activated as 1, 2, 3, 4.
-
It's "Activate in Recently Used Order" (and I've had this setting from the beginning - long before the problem appeared).
-
@ender85 So the bug got fixed in recent builds.

If the opening was in reverse order before, i wold call it a a UI bug and bad usability. Now devs changed it and you are unhappy about that silent fix.
First of all, I had no idea it was a bug before. Do you know that it was for a fact or is that supposition?
I thought it was simply the way that it was done, since after all, who says that A-B-C top down in bookmarks is supposed to equate to A-B-C left-to-right across in tabs? There are plenty of things in Vivaldi that don't make 100% sense to me as THE most logical way of doing something, so this was simply one of those. I accepted it long ago and forgot about it.
Now that we're looking at it retroactively, sure, it probably makes sense the "new" way, but if this was such an affront to humanity, where are the previous threads (and bug reports on your end)? Not saying they don't exist, but surely they must be legion given the five or six years.
Secondly, "unhappy about that silent fix" is inaccurate given the above. I didn't even know it was a fix. I thought we were supposed to bring to light this kind of thing. Maybe we aren't.
And aren't notable fixes supposed to be documented in the release notes? This one is notable. I can show you much less notable ones than this that are. Which still leads to the possibility that it's unintentional, perhaps a side-effect of another change. As we all know, that isn't exactly an unheard of occurrence, so it's not sci-fi.

No, it's still present in 3.5.2115.54. Behaviour prior to 3.5.2088.7 was that opening folder with tabs 1,2,3,4, then closing tabs one-by-one you'd see them in order 1,2,3,4. With 3.5.2115.54 you get 1,4,3,2 instead, which makes no sense at all.

I cannot reproduce this if the Start Page is the only tab opened, and Activate in Recently Used Order is the Closed Tab Activation Order.
If another tab was the most recently used before opening the Start Page, then that will, of course, be the one activated, and not any of those opened from the Start Page.
-
@ender85 That is exactly what I am experiencing and in my opinion it is a bug.
I have reported it just now(VB-74965) "Activate in Recently Used Order" is ignored with tabs opened from a folder
and replied to the e-mail from the bug tracker with some more information. Maybe @Gwen-Dragon can take a look at it? -
@Rexfahrer The problem continues to exist with the new snapshot 2115.63 (not that I would expect that after one hour since my bug report...) but I think the one described by @rseiler seems to be fixed.

OK, 1,4,3,2 order happens if other tabs were open before (otherwise 4,3,2,1 order happens), but it happens even if I closed all the tabs first (so the window only has the Speed Dial open).
-
@ender85 I think you are mistaken. You may be closing Tab 1, not Tab 4. Tab 1 is not the most recent tab.
- Open 1, 2, 3, 4 from a speed dial folder in the background with middle-click or Ctrl+Click
- Close the Start Page, then Tabs 4, 3, 2, 1 from right to left. The most recently active tab is to the left of the tab just closed.
-
I'm just reporting what I observed - I close the Speed Dial tab (with the gesture), and tab 1 activates; when I close tab 1, tab 4 activates.
-
Actually, it's weirder - the folder I was testing with has 15 bookmarks. When I tried with a folder that only has 4 bookmarks, the order seems to always be 4,3,2,1, but with the 15-bookmark folder, my description is correct most of the time - I just somehow got it to focus some random tab from the middle when closing Speed Dial tab.
So no, this issue definitely is not resolved, and the tab order is broken.
-
Since I upgraded to v3.5.2115.63, my sessions tab order is now reversed. It may be linked to this problem.
It was good yesterday and now since the upgrade, it the opposite way around.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I already did so yesterday, wasn't my e-mail received by the bug tracker? Here is what I wrote:
It might be possible that this is the intended behaviour, if so I would strongly recommend to reconsider that or make it optional:
First, it has never been this way.
Secondly, with the setting "Activate in Recently Used Order", when there is no tab which has been used before, in every other case the one which has been open for the longest time gets activated. For example when you open the bookmarks from the speed dial folder one by one - A B C D - and close the speed dial tab A gets activated, when you close tab A , tab B is activated and so forth. And with "New Tab Position" set to "As last Tab" the tab which has been open for the longest time is always the leftmost in the tab bar but in the described case the rightmost tab gets activated. Also, when you open a link in the background from tab D in the case described in the bug report, when you close tab D this new tab gets activated, although Tabs ABC have been open for a longer time.
Thanks for taking the time to look at this

From what I can tell, 3.5.2115.63 restores things back to the way that they always were before 3.5 builds.
In other words, the problem is gone. Unless you liked the (temporary) new way.
So, I guess the problem was tied together with this one after all, as some speculated, since it's one of the listed fixes: "[Tabs][Settings] New tab opened as the last tab despite “After Active Tab” option selected (VB-74797)."

Still broken in 3.5.2130.3 (tab order goes 1,5,4,3,2).
-
@ender85 What?! If you're seeing that, then it's a new kind of broken, since before there were only two possibilities (1-5, 5-1).
I just noticed that you're not talking about the release version but rather a snapshot.
You do acknowledge that it's fine in release, right?
I do see now that it's reversed in the snapshot, but it's a month off. Not seeing the weird order you are, just a simple reverse like you first noticed.
