Stopping tabs from being restored
-
After the most recent update (3.4.2066.86) Vivaldi started restoring all the tabs from my last session, instead of just opening my homepage (Gmail). Startup is set to Homepage, and my homepage is set to https://mail.google.com/. How do I stop this behavior? Thanks.
-
Trying again to see if anyone has any ideas about this. Occasionally Vivaldi will open normally. But soon it starts opening multiple tabs again. If I exit with only one tab open, when I restart Vivaldi, it starts that tab plus a tab with my home page.
-
@Kerampf What is your Startup With setting? Is the box for "Startup With Last Session" ticked?
-
@Ayespy No, startup is set to Homepage, and my homepage is set to https://mail.google.com/. I've tried starting with Session and then changing back to Homepage in the hope that toggling would clear it out, but no luck. Vivaldi has opened correctly for me for years, the problem started a month or two ago.
-
@Kerampf that sounds like interference from an extension, or a corruption of your profile. It might help to refresh your profile.

@Ayespy This is an update, since I don't yet know if the problem is fixed or not, because it will take a long time (maybe days) to test and it might be an unprovable hypothesis. Here's why: after receiving your suggestion, I began the refresh process, but when I tried to rename the folder I got the message that the folder was in use, even though Vivaldi was closed. I found the background program running in the system tray and closed that out. But then, before changing the name of the folder, I inadvertently started Vivaldi again -- and it went back to behaving normally. And it continued behaving normally for the rest of the day, no matter how many tabs I had open, and I frequently closed and reopened Vivaldi.
I turn off my computer when I go to bed, and when I started up today, Vivaldi was opening multiple tabs again. I started the refresh process, but shortly after I did, I realized each extension test would require a restart. OK, a pain in the butt all by itself, since it would eat several hours of my day while I add each extension and test, hours I really can't afford to spend (figure 15 minutes minimum for testing, adding an extension, retesting, and restarting the computer). But the more fundamental problem is that the problem comes and goes with as yet no known pattern, as we see from the oddity that it went away when I first attempted to do the refresh. It may have nothing to do with extensions.
I decided my best option at this point is to re-install maybe three extensions at a time (to reduce the number of times I have to restart, which I'll do only when I will be away from the computer anyway for a bit), but because of the apparently random behavior, it's quite possible that I could reinstall all of them without a problem, only to see it return after a few days or weeks -- making the entire process inconclusive. It only started after a recent Vivaldi update, but there have been several during the past weeks so that may not mean anything. So far I've only reinstalled three extensions.
So, figure no news is good news. I'll get back to you if the problem returns.

@Kerampf If you have the flag to allow Vivaldi to run in the background enabled, Vivaldi never shuts down all the way and so the setting whether to restore the previous session is not respected. You may have set this, or an extension may have.
-
@Ayespy I didn't know that was an option. I searched the settings for "background" and didn't find it. Where is it located? Also, for whatever reason the background program isn't running at the moment -- would that flag have been cleared when I refreshed Vivaldi?

@Kerampf
Hi, iirc it is not possible to reach the background services switch in Vivaldi settings.
Check chrome://settings and search there.Cheers, mib

@Ayespy @mib2berlin I just had to run out to do a quick errand, and decided to restart my computer while I was away, just to see what happens. The multiple tabs are back. I hadn't added any more extensions. But you're right, in chrome://settings, "Continue running background apps when Vivaldi is closed" was turned on. However, the Vivaldi background program still doesn't show in the system tray, and my settings are still set to open on the homepage.
-
When on Background for that specific situation, if not mistaken, just appears at Task Manager.
-
@Zalex108 Interesting -- sometimes in the tray, sometimes only in the Task Manager? In any case, so far so good, but I haven't done any restarts. It's also a puzzle why Vivaldi would be fine and suddenly start the multiple tabs.
Something that may or may not be relevant: some weeks ago Win 10 started opening a program or two on startup -- not all the time, and not always the same program either, usually Outlook or Word but sometime Vivaldi. There's nothing in the Win 10 Startup list to suggest why. That's something else I haven't solved. I think it's more recent behavior than the Vivaldi issue, but I'm not certain. Windows did start up with Vivaldi this time, when the multiple tabs returned. I'm mentioning it on the off-chance that tells you anything.
-
@Kerampf Windows should never start up with Vivaldi, if you want your settings to be valid.
-
@Ayespy Which makes sense ... but I haven't figured out why Windows is doing it. So far my Google searches haven't turned up any relevant explanation.
-
@Kerampf To be clear, Vivaldi Update Service does start with Windows. But nothing else should.
-
I don't know.
AS @Ayespy says, the Updater runs on Start up but not opens the Browser Window. So,
Look at PortableApps.com for AutoRuns and SystemExplorer and check from there.
You could also Win+R > MsConfig / Startup

@Ayespy @Zalex108 I did see the Vivaldi updater in Startup, which I expected, plenty of programs have updaters in Startup, and I regularly get notices of Vivaldi updates. But there's nothing that I can see to explain why Vivaldi, Word or Outlook (or anything else) randomly starts up, and not every time at that. If you like, I'll attach screenshots, but everything in there makes sense to me.
@Zalex108 I downloaded the two PortableApps you suggested, but as best as I can tell, they're basically showing me the same info as what's currently in the Startup and other tabs in the Task Manager (Startup is no longer under MSConfig).
But the Windows startup weirdness might be a red herring -- it occurred to me that when I started my computer this morning and found Vivaldi opening several tabs again, as best as I can remember my computer hadn't automatically opened Vivaldi. It was only later, when I restarted the computer just before I ran an errand.
Also I restarted the computer while I had dinner, and this time everything behaved correctly, including the Vivaldi background program switch staying off. Hard to suss out what's going on when things seem to occur randomly.....
I'm going to leave it alone for the rest of the night and see what happens in the morning. Till then!
-
I don't know then.
Yes,
Those Apps shows the StartUp and some other settings that can be found also from Win, but they have lots more info from the same App.You could check the Events Manager also and what triggered V, Outlook and others.
-
@Zalex108 @Ayespy @mib2berlin Vivaldi's worked correctly all day, including checks through a few computer restarts, and I've started adding back more extensions. It looks to me that the background switch was the problem, and if something manages to change it I can change it back. No random programs opening at Startup either -- obviously that's not a Vivaldi issue, but if/when it happens again, your suggestion to check the Events Manager is a good one. Thanks, all!
