Select address bar content stopped working (new tab/new window)
-
A few weeks ago, the described problem arrived at my workstation. I've been waiting a few Vivaldi releases for it to go away, but it's persistent. If I had to point to a date when it stopped working I'd guess it was when the first 3.4 snapshot was installed.
My current version is 3.4.2066.70 on Linux, Vivaldi is updated via Portage (Gentoo's package manager).
To clarify the problem:
- clicking in the addressbar still selects the whole URL string -- works as intended
- opening a new window or tab and automatically having the whole address bar selected -- does not work anymore
So for every Ctrl+T that I press for a new tab, I have to follow up with a Ctrl+L to manually select the whole address bar content to actually overtype what is there. I am used to opening a new tab and then just typing ahead some bits until I match a bookmark or history entry. Yes, I use the keyboard quite alot. So what it gives me currently is that even after several weeks I often forget the Ctrl+L and end up with 'http://localhostsomethingelsetypedin' and that doesn't work of course.
Relevant settings:
- "Select Address on Activation" is activated
- "New Tab Page" is set to "Homepage"
- "Homepage" is set to "Specific Page" which is "http://localhost/" -- I use a start page generated by a local webserver.
Synchronization is turned on and I also have Vivaldi on my Android phone (synced), which frequently forked up things because of settings not being available there and being reset to defaults or getting overwritten. But I triple-checked the relevant settings above and they are as they have been since basically forever.
Any idea what is going wrong here?

Latest Stable is 3.4.2066.86, upgrade and check again. Other than that, it may be another bug, there have been some regarding the address bar, its focus and slashes as of late, for example in the latest snapshot: [Address bar] Editing URL removes slash from path (VB-71838) You can report the bug here: https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/
As a workaround you could also use F2, instead of opening a new tab with Ctrl+T ... or switch focus to page content for a new tab, then at least you will click once to select the whole url. -
Well, the version 3.4.2066.86 hasn't arrived on Portage yet, so I probably have to wait another day or two for that.
This morning I tried to reproduce the old behaviour by installing the latest from the 3.3 line that was in Portage, which is 3.3.2022.35. The behaviour I'm looking for didn't return with that one at least, so far I haven't installed any older snapshots. Might do so to figure out where the change happened, if we can agree on that this is not intended behaviour (read: a bug).
Then I fumbled around with a lot of other settings to see if it changes anything. And guess what: when I uncheck "Show Full Address" in Address Bar Settings, it suddenly selects the whole string in the address bar again when opening a new tab. Of course then I don't see the scheme part of the URL, but that is the lesser of two evils that I can live with for the moment. By the way, the setting "Show Full Address" has also been activated for as long as I can think, so it's nothing I changed recently.
What would you say, bug or feature? Should this be reported?
As a workaround you could also use F2, instead of opening a new tab with Ctrl+T ... or switch focus to page content for a new tab, then at least you will click once to select the whole url.
What's F2 doing by the way? That shortcut is missing in my settings. "Focus Page Content" is intentionally deactivated, because I really want the address bar content to be selected whenever a new window or tab is opened. Like I said, I work a lot with the keyboard and having to reach for the mouse first to click the address bar takes even longer than an additional Ctrl+L.

Wait, no, that is not true :face_with_stuck-out_tongue_closed_eyes: Vivaldi stable has that version of course. I just installed it and the behaviour is just as described, so it didn't change back to the good old way.
Me needs a coffee ...

@Plasma Good to hear that . F2 is Quick Commands! If you are a keyboard user you should definitely check it out as it's pretty powerful (it is a calculator too). Search for it in the Settings, I don't know how it wasn't as your default.
-
Any opinions yet if this new behaviour is a bug and should be reported, or is a known intentional change? I'd like to resolve this thread in some way.

@Plasma Report it as a bug as stated above. Did you try using F2 (Quick commands drop down) for opening new urls without that hassle?

The latest update broke this address selection for me:
Vivaldi 3.4.2066.90 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision 27bd619214542ad5cfc3845341214d10658348ad
OS Windows 10 OS Version 1909 (Build 18363.1139)When "Focus Page Content on New Tab" is unchecked, cursor appears on address bar at end of address, but text in address bar is not selected. Seems they break this every now and then... Guess we just have to wait for yet another update...
Back to Ctrl+T, Ctrl+A... Maybe there could be a single hotkey that sends both - so I don't have to keep changing the reflex I use hundreds of times a day? Seems like it is impossible for the devs not to break this every few months!

Another update:
Vivaldi 3.4.2066.94 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision 4e3bdf393a5ba6b9b97a1c78ee5e2768121a7c6a
OS Windows 10 OS Version 1909 (Build 18363.1139)Which included this:
Changelog since Vivaldi 3.4 (2066.76)
[Address bar][Extensions] Focus not in address field when using new tab extension VB-73167I guess they can claim the cursor is "in address field", but if the old address is not selected it doesn't help much.
Or maybe "when using new tab extension" implies using some actual extension rather than the standard Vivaldi commands? And they have broken the workflow for everyone to help out some unknown extension?
This would be much simpler if we could just see the actual bug system!
And this latest update broke the Win+Up hotkey for maximizing the Vivaldi window - again! The previous update had just fixed it after weeks of not working. How can such basic features be so fragile?
