Alter how additional Search Engines function
-
In Chrome, you can (ab)use the additional search engine feature as a way to create 'shortcuts' to websites. For example, on Chrome if you create a search engine with the Keyword 'Amazon' and under "URL with %s in place of query" you enter "www.amazon.com", then if you go into the omnibar and type 'Amazon' you'll be taken directly to www.amazon.com. I thought that Vivaldi worked in a similar way but I was frustrated to find that in order to get the same result you have to type 'amazon' space, followed by a character. This kind of kills the convenience of it for me, is there some sort of setting I can change to get this functionality? Would it be achievable through a JS mod? I realize this is available through extensions, but I already have far too many extensions and would like to not add another if I can avoid it.

Don't misuse search engines for this purpose, Vivaldi has a better way. Create a bookmark for whatever page you want and give it a nickname.

Wow, I had no idea this function existed, thanks!

Just note, nicknames must be unique, otherwise they wouldn't be able to function this way. To add notes, or sort of "tag" bookmarks with keywords like perhaps the name of a project, you can use the description field.
One last feature of the bookmarks in Vivaldi that might not be obvious is that the Speed Dial is nothing more than a bookmarks folder with the speed dial attribute set. You can have multiple speed dials, just check the box when editing a folder. I typically have around 8-10 speed dials depending on my work at the time, about 6 permanent and 2-6 for current projects... plus the mobile speed dial.
