Entire computer freeze when trying to use NETFLIX.
-
Edit : Reported the issue, "VB-68697".
Happens only when "Hardware-accelerated video decode" is Enabled. No issue when disabled. GPU is Radeon 7970GHz.
I have no idea what causes it. It just does. I recorded a video of it happening because it literally happens EVERY TIME once I'm logged into Netflix.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ0XZTzMy88What could possibly causes this? This is an on-going issue that has been happening for a long time now through various snapshots. Sometimes it works, while some other times it doesn't at all. A few weeks ago, I could at least watch something. Now it just freeze the moment I login.
Literally only happens with Vivaldi and Netflix. No such issues with any other website or with other browsers.Sorry for not being more informative than this, but there's literally no information. The crashlog folder is entirely empty. Surely I can't be the only one with this issue even on a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro.

Maybe some GPU driver issue? Have you tried disabled hardware acceleration (there is both an option in Settings and a couple others for videos specifically in
vivaldi://flags
) and see if that changes anything? -
I've disabled Hardware-Acceleration Decoding in vivaldi://flags.
So far, it seems to have done the trick and Netflix no longer freeze up my entire computer the moment I access it. But this means I also lose hardware decoding for all other websites.
I just don't understand why this happens, only with Vivaldi and only on Netflix.
What is Netflix doing that could make it lock up like that? -
@TetraSky I can't say why it would happen, especially only with the Vivaldi + Netflix combo. But at least we now know that it is an issue with hardware acceleration.
I would suggest updating or re-installing (if you have the latest version) your graphics drivers, just in case there is something weird going on there. And if that doesn't do the trick, report this as a bug and include that it is caused by hardware acceleration in the report.

I was just watching a movie last nite on Netflix. No Issues.

Are you both missing an update? (although it probably won't solve this issue)
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/47954/minor-update-for-vivaldi-desktop-browser-3-1I just don't understand why this happens, only with Vivaldi and only on Netflix.
a) Different GPUs have different problems with Chromium code (gpu blacklist) - maybe check vivaldi://gpu and include (only) the "Graphics Feature Status" area details in a possible bug report
b) Vivaldi had to use system ("free") codecs, unlike Chrome etc. due to licensing costs

@TbGbe according to the Update manager I have the latest version.
But I had no problems on the SnapShot.
To be honest I've never had an issue with video playback (except fb) and that is fb's fault. -
@greybeard Latest Stable is 3.1.1929.34
But I just realised that you are using latest Snapshot version, sorry! -

But I just realised that you are using latest Snapshot version, sorry! No problem here. I can't even memorize those version numbers. Hace to copy to note to keep track. Plus my memory isn't what it used to be...

I have a Radeon R9 280 and used to have this issue in Chromium Opera for as long as I still used it, only when browsing the catalog not while watching. My impression is it happens since after they added those previews on mouse hover... But happens even if you aren't hovering a title.
I'm not sure if I can still reproduce this in Vivaldi but I'll try later.
Both AMD and NVIDIA have issues with hardware accelerated video in browsers in some of their drivers, there's even a known issue listed about Edge (not sure about which, the new Chromium Edge or the old EdgeHTML based) in the latest AMD Radeon Software release notes. I'm clearly not disabling hardware acceleration to "fix" this because I paid for the card to receive a working GPU feature as long as there's working code in the software (Chromium/Vivaldi) side, so it may be worth sending a bug report to AMD too.
Netflix is special because they use the hardware acceleration feature to impose DRM. See this Vivaldi help page for example: https://help.vivaldi.com/article/widevinecdm-eme-drm-support-on-linux/
This issue might not happen in Edge or the Netflix Windows Store app in the same system because Microsoft implement it in a different way since it's their OS and they love locked proprietary media (only Edge on Windows, Safari on OS X and Chrome on Chrome OS have an implementation trusted by Netflix to get 4K).

Pretty much my issue. I have the Radeon HD7970Ghz, which is basically the same card as your R9 280, just a different name (AMD rebranding...). The fact you had a similar issue before at least reassure me that I wasn't the only one out there. Makes me think it might really be an issue with this specific card that may or may not happen randomly for some people depending on their configuration?
I'll try submitting a bug report. But since there's no crashlog getting generated, it probably won't help much.
I have also tried disabling all my extensions (I really only had Ublock Origin, Tampermonkey and BetterTTV) to see if maybe one of them caused the issue. It didn't help.
-
So, yeah, I can consistently reproduce it. Clean installed with the latest drivers.
I reported the issue in Chromium's bug tracker, I'll add that info to your VB-68697 report by emailing it.Star the issue if you would like to receive updates about it:

@TetraSky It may be something else...
Yesterday MS forced an update of Micro$oft Edge.
Now I can no longer get audio on Netflix !!!Do I detect a conspiracy? or am I adding 2 + 2 to get 5?
Did you get an update with Micro$oft Edge?I have checked just about every setting I can think of...
-
@greybeard I have this hard freeze issue since mostly forever in Opera or Vivaldi, it isn't new.
Here in Edge 83.0.478.45 Windows 10 2004 no freezes, everything is working while watching too . -
@rluik Only at Windows 10 OS Version 1909 (Build 18363.900) and Edge Version 81.0.416.81 (Official build) (64-bit)
-
@rluik I've received an update for it, saying they are unable to reproduce the issue, as such it's unlikely to ever get fixed.
Unfortunately, we were not able to reproduce this issue.
Sounds a lot like a driver issue though, probably gfx card is not supported, or the specific configuration is causing this issue to happen. In any case, we would recommend you to contact the providers about this issue as well.
Otherwise, it's difficult to say what might be causing it. Unless we are able to pinpoint the exact cause, we will unfortunately not be able to do anything about this issue for now. So sorry that we are not able to do anything for this. Should you at any point figure out what is causing this, please let us know.
Thanks for your time and using Vivaldi.
But it's great to know I'm not the only one! If you have some insight on it, that would be great.
For now, the only fix is really to simply disable Hardware Acceleration Decode.@greybeard It's a constant issue that I've been having for months, unrelated to Edge's update or of the latest version of Windows. It has persisted over a new computer build where the only component in common was the GPU. So it is possible that the AMD 7970 / 280 is simply incompatible for some reason with whichever thing Vivaldi uses for Netflix.
-
Let's see what happens in Chromium bug tracker. I also sent a report to AMD pointing to the issue I opened there, hopefully they can work together to fix this.
-
I have been experiencing a similar issue today, but on Google Maps and in Manjaro rather than Windows. I was looking at some apartments and used Maps to see where they were in relation to the city, and my computer would just hang completely. First I just couldn't interact with anything and then the mouse would also freeze a few seconds later, just like in the OP's video. I'm also using an AMD GPU, although one of their latest (see below).
I still need to do some more testing on this (like see if disabling HW acceleration changes anything). I also want to test on Windows because IIRC I have had the same issue happen there but I didn't know what it was or see a pattern to it.
My system:
OS: Manjaro 20.0.3 XFCE
GPU: Radeon RX 5700XT with the amdgpu (mesa) video driver.
Vivaldi: 3.1.1929.28 (64-bit) -
"Good" news is I could reproduce it in Chrome Dev and it generated a crash report, now definitely more developers will be available to look into this issue in the upstream project.
-
@tetrasky This is really a very frustrating problem, well, there are number of reasons for the Netflix crashing or freezing problem. To fix the problem update the Netflix app if any update is available, also make sure your internet connection is working fine.
Moreover, you can try other solutions as well like;
• Check the date and time of your system is set correctly
• Sign out of your account and sign in again
• Clear the app data from the settings
• Update your system driver and Windows system
It is estimated this works for you to fix Netflix crashing on computer but if still facing the problem, then contact the Netflix help center - https://help.netflix.com/en/ -
