Taskbar icon missing on Windows 10?
-
Hi!
Not sure if I am posting this in the correct way.
For the last 1,5 weeks the taskbar icon for Vivaldi is gone on Windows 10. I have tried to completely uninstall/reinstall. Both the latest stable version as well as the very latest snapshots.
Still the same.
I have tried:
1929.28
1929.29What can be causing this?
Thanks!

@Xophile Unpin it and repin it to the task bar.
I keep losing my start menu icons for Vivaldi. Right-click, More, Open file location, change icon is needed to reset it.
Windows has plenty of its own bugs.
-
That was quick!
Tried to pin/unpin, it now looks like this instead:
-
I also tried to change the icon like the way you described. No luck their either.
Never had this issue with other apps and everythings else is running fine.
-
@Xophile Rebooting should fix it.

@Xophile Try to reset your Windows icon cache. This sometimes happens with icons in Windows.
Delete the file
c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\IconCache.db
and restart Explorer through the Task Manager. -
Hi!
Thank you so much.
I have tried all of the suggestions, nothing works... Still there is no proper icon.
Cache is deleted, rebooted etc etc.
This is driving me a bit crazy...

I even ran this tool:

@Xophile What does it point to if you examine the properties of the pinned icon? You have to right-click twice on the icons, first on the task bar and then on the popup, then choose properties. Then click "Change Icon".
For me it points to:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default\Web Applications\_crx_mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli\Vivaldi.ico
Does that file exist?
You could try pointing it to the actual Vivaldi.exe instead.

That worked!
It pointed to the very same location as on your computer.
I might have figured out what happened. I used to have Vivaldi installed only for my own user, then I wanted to upgrade to a new snapshot and chose to have it for all users instead. That meant that the .exe location changed and after that, my Vivaldi-install is located here:
C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\ApplicationI changed the settings you provided and it is 100% fine now.
But one more thing, can I change it to the black icon instead of the red one?
Thanks a lot to everyone for your extremely friendly and quick replies!
Loving Vivaldi and the community already!

Follow the method that I gave earlier and browse to select the Snapshot executable (or an icon file).

Right! Couldn't find the black icon anywhere but I'll wait for the next snapshot-build!
-
@Xophile You can just install the snapshot as standalone, copy the ico out of there and (optionally) delete the standalone. Then point your taskbar icon to the standalone one. The icon for the application itself will still be red though.
To save you the trouble, here's one I prepared earlier

The kindness and level of support/dedication to Vivaldi and its user amazes me!
Thanks!
Enjoy your weekend!

@pathduck I didn’t know Windows 10 uses another icon path for app in taskbar rather than the icon path of the shortcut in %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
You saved my day. This drove me nuts.
