High resource consumption = fans make big noise
-
Hi,
Those with the problem, could you confirm whether happens on a Clean Profile / Clean User?
Thank you.

@ImaginaryFreedom What pages are open in Vivaldi? I see it in many different browsers that something on a site will causes a CPU spike while the page is idle (sometimes it is an ad on the page other times it is the page or some javascript on the site)

@Gwen-Dragon said in High resource consumption = fans make big noise:
@ImaginaryFreedom Rarely some ad-blocker extensions in Vivaldi may cause this on pages.
I do have an ad blocker installed.
The frustrating thing is that because it completely locks up the system I cannot troubleshoot the source of the problem, the UI becomes completely unresponsive. And because it appears to strike at random, I cannot easily troubleshoot it by making some change and then waiting for it to happen again. Because I cannot yet find any common thread between these crashes.
There is a Chromium extension I ran across, written by someone at NIST, which is designed to kill off browser processes if they start using an extremely high (configurable) amount of CPU cycles.
Unfortunately it appears to use an "experimental" Chromium API that Vivaldi does not support:
https://github.com/usnistgov/Metrology/tree/master/Reaper
Something like that would at least give me the ability to go in and try to figure out where the problem is. Would love it if Vivaldi would support that API.

Because I cannot yet find the common thread with these occurrences since I lose all access to the OS when they happen, it's very difficult to find a common thread or make a change and then "test" because I don't know what I'm testing for.
I'm not interested in running an extension-free instance for any length of time because I rely on those extensions for security and privacy reasons.

Today I had a number of CNN tabs open along with some others, but this is probably the first time that it crashed with mostly CNN tabs.
I use NoScript to block 80% of the JS on CNN anyway, partly for performance reasons. CNN has a very large number of embedded trackers.

To test on a Clean environment is the way to find out where the problem comes from.
You should Test on Clean and browse on other sites if necessary.
Relying to Security and Privacy reasons one would assume those sites are not confident enough. That would be reason.

Common denominator here seems to be the macbook pro.[...] macbook pro has been the main factor,so it obviously is a mac issue.
@Priest72 also said in High resource consumption = fans make big noise:
Strangely i used to experience the "beachball of death" with the firefox browser, but this was in linux and not macbook which i have never used.
I'm a bit confused. How come you're so certain the problem is the Macbook Pro, when you also claim to never have used one? Why is the common denominator the Macbook Pro and not Vivaldi FOR Mac?
I have used Safari for ages, never a single issue. I've installed Vivaldi for Mac and all of a sudden my CPU goes bonkers. Really seems like a Macbook issue?

"Same" here:
MBP 2015, 13", IRIS 6100 and 1.5gb, Core i7, 16GBRam, more than enough disk, Wifi or ETH, Vivaldi most current as of today. 10.15.7 Catalina
Extensions: 1Pass, uBlock, Darkreader.
What i did so far: Cleared all profiles, made a completely new one, used with no extensions at all. Checked HW-Acceleration, Reinstalled vivaldi (Deleted it completely and downloaded/installed again. The result is mostly the same: CPU-Usage rises above 70%, temperature spikes to 80°C and so fans go ballistic, as soon as i chose to play any YT-video above 720p (720p 50 and 60, 1080p - does not matter at all).
Strange enough, with most current FF, the very same extensions with identical rules (Export ublock and import). CPU stays completely calm and around 18-50% at 720p60, CPU at 64°C and fans at around 2000rpm (so not hearable). In Vivaldi, the very same videos drive the fans and temperature to utter madness...
Edit: mostly vivaldi helper task(s) go through the roof. I did not have other Big-Programs (Adobe, Office, Cutting etc.) running in backgrounds except from some small helpers like SMC-Fan, Menumeters, Bartender and the usual stuff like TimeMachine, 1pass - but they all stay fairly calm - except Vivaldi with YT.
so, i'm back using FF for instance...
whatever... my2cents to this.

Not just the Macbook Pro--my 2017 Imac fans are running a a lot more then usual and Vivaldi constantly crashing (dead bird on black screen) and nobody at Vivaldi has an answer. I want so to use this browser but its reached a point where my productivity is affected.
-
@Zalex108 : I do confirm, it happens with clean user and/or clean profile. Not immediately, but within 1 hour worth of surfing YT with watching vids.
-
Thanks, that's what is need it.
After that,
You may check few more options:- Toggle Hardware Acceleration On/Off
Vivaldi://Flags
HA Decoding On/Off
-
@Zalex108 Hi and thanx
HA Decoding On/Off: I do not have any such entry on or in the Flags.
Did a Toggle HW Acceleration ON Off, restart of Viv, If off: Video is not even starting.
On ON: No change to the behaviour.
CPU Usage with 2 vivaldi Helpers each at 25% around, temperature rises from around 50°C to 70°C.
Checked with video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPGZx_-Ervk on 720p
No extensions installed (no adblocker, no darkreader, no 1 pass, nothing) - Clean Profile
If I change to 1080p, temperature 73°C and above and 2 helper tasks at 30% and 70%
I'm not a temperature geek or such, resp. I do not have a "fetish" in that. It's just strange. In FF, i can watch the very same video at 1080p with FF at about 15% usage, temperature at around 60°c - with 3 extensions (ublock, darkreader, 1Pass) enabled. -
Hi,
I meant about this:
Toggle them and also the new state combined with HA from Settings toggle.
-
@Zalex108 : thanks, yap, sorry, found them.
Desactivated, relaunched, together with HW A from Settings. Not realy any difference (did that for each independenty with relaunch), did not have any siginificant impact, if on or off. Thanks. -
-
Is the OS updated and have you restarted the computer recently?
-
@Zalex108 OK, no problem. If you watch that YT-Video i linked above, how's your Mac behaving? Is it reproducable with your equiptment or device? BR
-
I don't have a Mac, those are some common steps to check when this kind of issues arises.
I'll check on W7 when on Desktop despite the OS difference.
-
Despite Geek's control, Fan/Temp is a problem indicator.
But Chromium's suffers about it even despite whether a problem exist or not, also on Windows.
-
@Chas4 Yap, OS up2date and rebooted this morning.
