mailto links opening a blank page
-
this was the only related macos forum thread I could found. I saw that people are having the similar issue with windows and linux. I'm having this issue too. when I click on a mailto: link it opens a blank page in a new tab. is there a workaround? or any other suggestions for this?

@baris-sehri What do you have under
chrome://settings/handlers
?If you have an entry there try to remove it.

@baris-sehri OK so no entry? And this happens when you select a mailto: link from outside Vivaldi and also from inside Vivaldi?
Might be an OS setting then, and then I'm on thin ice since I don't use Macs, sorry ...
If you want more information, the custom handlers are in the file Preferences (JSON) and you could examine it with a good JSON editor. But I think somewhere on your OS is a setting that just calls on Vivaldi without any URL.

@Pathduck no no it only happens in vivaldi I just tried it with firefox for just to be sure theres no problem with other browsers they are opening mailto:
now, I also tried it with chrome, opera, edge and brave and it works in all of them...

It's funny, if I click a mailto link in any other browser, it will open Vivaldi with the Gmail compose mail page. In Windows OS settings, Vivaldi is also set as the default application for Email. In the Vivaldi Preferences file I have the following as a custom handler for mailto:
https://mail.google.com/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s
So I'm guessing the OS sends a mailto: link to the browser which then invokes the custom handler.
I think MacOS might handle things differently. I think the question is: What did you expect to happen? What does the other browsers do? What do they open? If Vivaldi does not know what to do with mailto links it might just open a new tab...

@Pathduck can we say we found a bug?

@baris-sehri If you want to report a bug, you can of course. But I'm not sure.

@Pathduck I expect my default email handler app to open a new mail composer window when I click on a mailto: link. every other browsers are opening a new mail composer window in my default mail handler app. in firefox theres a section that you can choose what to do with mailto: links. but, I couldn't find something similar in vivaldi prefs.

@baris-sehri OK probably best to see if any MacOS experts show up here.
Check if it works in the Guest View or a clean profile?
-
@Pathduck I also reported it as a bug, let's see...

I will let you know when I do it.

@Pathduck said in mailto links opening a blank page:
chrome://settings/handlers
Has there been a fix for this issue? I can't get Gmail to be the default email client in Vivaldi.
