Webroot filtering extension causes problems
-
I've been struggling to figure out this issue for almost a year, and believe I've finally got it. My conclusion is that the Webroot filtering extension blocks the Google "this type of file can harm your computer ..." unless the file has made it to Webroot's Whitelist, in which case the message gets bypassed. The result is that if I participate in a beta test or quickly install an update, the file fails to complete the download. Here's what I wrote Webroot:
With Extension in place, an upgraded program will fail to download properly. The entire file downloads, then continues to spin forever and never closes. This happens with newly upgraded programs. I'm assuming programs not yet on your whitelist. With the extension disabled, the program downloads and a message pops up saying "Confirm download. This type of file can harm your computer ..."
When I click Keep, the file downloads fine. This is consistent and repeatable. So apparently, the extension blocks Google's warning message and Vivaldi awaits an answer that never comes since the message never appears. Here was the helpful response from Webroot a week later:
We do not support Vivaldi with our extension. I recommend you use Chrome, Firefox, or Edge if you want to use our extension.
Figured I'd post this to help others, and maybe there is something Vivaldi can do or an idea someone has. Since I use the fabulous extension control extension, I can quickly turn off the extension when installing newly created programs, but this was a hassle for a year.

Thanks letting Webroot users in the community know about this.
I have run across this issue with another extension some time ago, reported it to Vivaldi and the extension developers. Now it works.

@steveshank Good job figuring this out. Please post in the thread below so others can find it: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/20271/third-party-programs-slowing-down-or-blocking-vivaldi
Also, just curious, is running the extension a prerequisite for the web shield in Webroot or is it stand-alone? Does it in any way integrate with the locally running AV? The reason I ask is in Avast I don't need an extension to get the benefits of the Web Shield.
So do you really need to run it at all to get blocking of malicious sites by Webroot?

Very good question. I think I'll explore it in their forums. The extension does not come from the Google store, but when it is disabled, webroot continues to tell me I have web protection against risky sites.
I posted to the thread as you recommended.
