Vivaldi uses a lot of space
-
I checked out the latest vivaldi beta version..
My phone has 32 GB of space and reported that the space is getting low,
so I checke the phone storage.
Vivaldi was the app with the most used space.
1,2 GB with 6 open tabs.
Opera justed is just using 642 MB with 29 oben tabs.Hope the storage requirements will go down with the next beta/build.
-
Can't confirm, mine is using 193 MB of storage space with 6 tabs of mixed content. Also Opera stays always many Chromium versions behind (currently on 74, and until 2017/2018 a complete buggy mess), while Vivaldi is on 78, this only makes Vivaldi far superior.
-
Did you look at how it's using that data? My Vivaldi is using 1.87 GB, but 1.09 GB of that is cache and 619 is data. The app itself is only taking 153 MB. You probably have a lot of stuff stored locally. Clear your cache and that will drop down quite a bit I figure. You may or may not want to delete the data.
-
I do not have problems with my mobile at all, although it is a basic model with 1Gb RAM (500 Megabytes free), although sometimes it is convenient to clear the cache and history.

Well, the OP hasn't been on the forum in 2 months, but has been on since my previous reply. Not sure if what we've written has been seen, but I figured why not a data point.
Right now I've got a half dozen browsers open, and here are their memory usage stats. In order to make each measurement fair, first I closed all applications and then opened Device Care to the memory page (note: the info in the apps section of settings reports on average memory usage and the numbers for Vivaldi were way lower, so not representative of active use). Then I opened each browser one by one and checked the memory use before moving to the next browser. To confirm this was an accurate test, I had checked the Device Care memory use for Vivaldi before closing everything out as I had been actively using it for hours -- switching tabs, loading multiple pages simultaneously, etc. -- and the numbers were very similar, only different by less than 10 MB.
Vivaldi Beta - 330 MB - 51 tabs
Vivaldi Snapshot - 427 MB - 29 tabs
Chrome - 1 GB - 8 tabs
Firefox - 468 MB - 67 tabs
Brave - 470 MB - 3 tabs
Kiwi - 422 MB - 1 tabI'm not sure what's up with Chrome there. I think it needs another test. But I chose not to give any browser special treatment, whatever was reported was what it got. Certainly running like a dozen tests, dropping the maximum and the minimum, and then averaging the middle 10 results would provide a more trustworthy result; opening the exact same pages in each browser would be better still.
But the point of this little test wasn't to show which browser was most efficient in its memory consumption. I just wanted to see what Vivaldi was currently doing on my system, and then decided to compare it to what I'd get from a few other browsers. Everything is in the same ballpark, except for Chrome and with Vivaldi Beta having a significantly lower number than the rest (especially considering the tabs count). Vivaldi Beta could be an outlier as well, but it reported 339 before I killed it to start the tests.
The conclusion I draw from this is that the memory consumption is highly dependent upon the content of the pages that are loaded. All the browsers are about the same, Firefox has extensions installed as does Kiwi. Whatever you're loading is going to make a bigger impact than browser choice, most likely. Some browsers may be more efficient with certain types of content, but answering these questions requires substantially more testing than I have time for right now.

I have noticed exactly the same thing. I have about 8 tabs open, yet my Vivaldi is using about 1 GB of space.
However, for me, I started looking into it because on first launch, Vivaldi takes about a minute or so to start, freezing my device and then I get the "Vivaldi is unresponsive. Close, Wait".
It all started when I synced Vivaldi on Android. Before it was using a nice amount of space, and launching normally. When I synced, it consumed a large amount of space, and it takes forever to launch, making it painful to use.
I am assuming it is because it may be caching some of the synced content?

@areynaldos , although with 8 pages open depends a lot on how much these pages consume, 1Gb is not a normal consumption of Vivaldi. It may be due to some extension you use or another cause. The best way to find out is to open the Vivaldi Task Manager (Shift + Esc) and check the process that spends so much memory.
-
@Catweazle , thanks for your input.
However, we are talking about Vivaldi on Android... No extensions, and no Shift-ESC
I have found out that if I uninstall-install Vivaldi, consumption is fine and launch times are good, until I sync. Then the problems come.
Thanks anyway!

I sometimes have similar behavior when I am editing a bookmark and click the folder to move it to a different folder. It'll happen when trying to open the tree view to see the full list of my folders. It does *not* freeze my device, I can switch to other apps if I want to, and upon hitting the
Wait
button Vivaldi will hang for a few more seconds at most then respond as normal. The reason this is happening for me is due to the size of my bookmarks library. I have over 100,000 bookmarks that I synced to Android from my workstation, and the correspondingly large folder tree to logically organize that many bookmarks.
This behavior is not unique to Vivaldi. The exact same thing happens in Google Chrome. It's not some unique flaw in Vivaldi's implementation, rather it's a side effect of pushing this system to the limits of its performance capability. It's a tradeoff I'm willing to make in order to have access to my data and it's more than offset by the improvements to my workflow that I get from using Vivaldi with my library synced.
If your library is large, it's going to take a long time to get fully synced. All this sync stuff is unrelated to the data consumption numbers discussed previously.

See my first 2 posts in this thread. You need to look at how that data is being used, it could be that a large part is simply the cache. That would fit with reinstallation clearing the consumption numbers. The types of pages you load and how manage the local storage have a significant impact on the data consumption that will be reported for Vivaldi Android.
As you can see, I sync an unusually large amount of data, however I have never seen 8 GB reported for Vivaldi's data use.
Edit: typo

If Vivaldi Android really would spend so much on RAM and space, it would not even be able to work on my mobile, which only has 500-600 Mb free Ram and about 2 Gb in total are available (see specs in my signature). However it works fast and smoothly, without any problem.
-
@bonetone , thanks! Yes, most of this is cache, but seems weird to be using 900 MB or so for only 8 tabs.
Since the problem comes when I sync, I am assuming that somehow Vivaldi is also caching the synced content from other devices.
As per the bookmarks, it seems like a good lead... I'll check how many I have, but I am sure is nowhere near what you have!
Thank you!
-
@areynaldos the cache & local storage number you see isn't only for the currently open tabs. SSI that 900 MB is (almost certainly) not only related to those 8 tabs.
I don't think cache gets synced.
Here you can see the types that get synced and I have it set to sync everything.
And in these two screenshots you can see how my storage space is being used. Both of these Vivaldi instances are connected to the same sync account and both are set to sync everything.
There is more than half a gig difference between them in terms of cache, so that's not being synced. Vivaldi itself is using just under 150 MB in both cases, everything else is some form of user data, whether it's my synced profile, files I've downloaded, or stored copies of the media and code from sites I've visited.
So that additional space is variable and controllable. If it is bothering you, you can change the way the browser handles cache and have it cleared more frequently. Or just don't worry about it and save on data use on the network and have some faster pages loads to boot. It's all a matter if personal preference.

Hi everyone,
Similar to the thread here Vivaldi uses a lot of space
I have noticed that Vivaldi is constantly increasing its storage space. Currently it is using about 3GB of space in my phone.
Looking into it, cache is only 700K, and most of the usage is "User Data", at 2.11 GB.
Why is user data so large and growing? I sync between three devices, which I believe may be playing a role, but still, it seems very high.
Thank you!
-
Hello BoneTone,
I changed phones since this thread was alive, so the space uses is not so much of an issue now.
However, I opened another thread around the user data usage been very high (2GB in my phone), with a 700K cache.
I am posting here, though, because you mentioned here that "you can change the way the browser handles cache". That is not possible in the Android version, or is it?
Thanks!
-
@areynaldos , also in Vivaldi mobile you can delete all your browser data.
https://help.vivaldi.com/android/android-tools/android-history/
-
Thank you @Catweazle ... I can delete the browsing (cached) data, but not the user data, which accounts for the majority of Vivaldi's space.
I am wondering why it needs so much user data for bookmarks, passwords, addresses, etc. Seems overkill.
-
@areynaldos
Hm, this is really a lot, on my phone it use 340MB Memory and 407MB Data whatever that mean. If you use sync you can delete all in the app settings, after sync again most settings, bookmarks and passwords are back.
I have to do this some time ago and had my browser up and running in 10 minutes.Cheers, mib

In fact, even with no tabs open, almost no pages saved, Vivaldi on Android occupies 713Mb of user data and 614Mb of Cache. Added to the size of the app, this amounts to around 1.0 and 1.2gb of space, it is one of the apps that takes up the most space on my cell phone without even using it properly.
In contrast, the Brave that I use most often, has over 300 saved pages and 10 open tabs, has only 248Mb of user data and 192Mb of Cache. In all, it doesn't even reach 500Mb including the size of the application itself.
In both I don't have synchronization activated, and the discrepancy is big.
I already uninstalled and started using Vivaldi again, but in a short time this occupied space grows quickly, with much less frequency of use than others.
This needs to be fixed, it's very uncomfortable. Other than that it has fewer functions that I want available, like privacy changes and locks, it doesn't make sense to take up so much!
*This is an update from those using Vivaldi in 2023 and this issue is still unresolved

@Luartes
Hi, I know about a bug report about but I cant reproduce it, this is with Vivaldi sync enabled.
I delete the cache, this is only the app and the user data and I donยดt use other browser except for testing:Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite
