Vivaldi uses a lot of space

@areynaldos said in Vivaldi uses a lot of space:
@Catweazle , thanks for your input.
However, we are talking about Vivaldi on Android... No extensions, and no Shift-ESC
I have found out that if I uninstall-install Vivaldi, consumption is fine and launch times are good, until I sync. Then the problems come.
Thanks anyway!
If Vivaldi Android really would spend so much on RAM and space, it would not even be able to work on my mobile, which only has 500-600 Mb free Ram and about 2 Gb in total are available (see specs in my signature). However it works fast and smoothly, without any problem.

@bonetone , thanks! Yes, most of this is cache, but seems weird to be using 900 MB or so for only 8 tabs.
Since the problem comes when I sync, I am assuming that somehow Vivaldi is also caching the synced content from other devices.
As per the bookmarks, it seems like a good lead... I'll check how many I have, but I am sure is nowhere near what you have!
Thank you!

@areynaldos the cache & local storage number you see isn't only for the currently open tabs. SSI that 900 MB is (almost certainly) not only related to those 8 tabs.
I don't think cache gets synced.
Here you can see the types that get synced and I have it set to sync everything.
And in these two screenshots you can see how my storage space is being used. Both of these Vivaldi instances are connected to the same sync account and both are set to sync everything.
There is more than half a gig difference between them in terms of cache, so that's not being synced. Vivaldi itself is using just under 150 MB in both cases, everything else is some form of user data, whether it's my synced profile, files I've downloaded, or stored copies of the media and code from sites I've visited.
So that additional space is variable and controllable. If it is bothering you, you can change the way the browser handles cache and have it cleared more frequently. Or just don't worry about it and save on data use on the network and have some faster pages loads to boot. It's all a matter if personal preference.

Hi everyone,
Similar to the thread here Vivaldi uses a lot of space
I have noticed that Vivaldi is constantly increasing its storage space. Currently it is using about 3GB of space in my phone.
Looking into it, cache is only 700K, and most of the usage is "User Data", at 2.11 GB.
Why is user data so large and growing? I sync between three devices, which I believe may be playing a role, but still, it seems very high.
Thank you!

Hello BoneTone,
I changed phones since this thread was alive, so the space uses is not so much of an issue now.
However, I opened another thread around the user data usage been very high (2GB in my phone), with a 700K cache.
I am posting here, though, because you mentioned here that "you can change the way the browser handles cache". That is not possible in the Android version, or is it?
Thanks!
-
@areynaldos , also in Vivaldi mobile you can delete all your browser data.

Thank you @Catweazle ... I can delete the browsing (cached) data, but not the user data, which accounts for the majority of Vivaldi's space.
I am wondering why it needs so much user data for bookmarks, passwords, addresses, etc. Seems overkill.

@areynaldos
Hm, this is really a lot, on my phone it use 340MB Memory and 407MB Data whatever that mean. If you use sync you can delete all in the app settings, after sync again most settings, bookmarks and passwords are back.
I have to do this some time ago and had my browser up and running in 10 minutes.Cheers, mib

In fact, even with no tabs open, almost no pages saved, Vivaldi on Android occupies 713Mb of user data and 614Mb of Cache. Added to the size of the app, this amounts to around 1.0 and 1.2gb of space, it is one of the apps that takes up the most space on my cell phone without even using it properly.
In contrast, the Brave that I use most often, has over 300 saved pages and 10 open tabs, has only 248Mb of user data and 192Mb of Cache. In all, it doesn't even reach 500Mb including the size of the application itself.
In both I don't have synchronization activated, and the discrepancy is big.
I already uninstalled and started using Vivaldi again, but in a short time this occupied space grows quickly, with much less frequency of use than others.
This needs to be fixed, it's very uncomfortable. Other than that it has fewer functions that I want available, like privacy changes and locks, it doesn't make sense to take up so much!
*This is an update from those using Vivaldi in 2023 and this issue is still unresolved

@Luartes
Hi, I know about a bug report about but I cant reproduce it, this is with Vivaldi sync enabled.
I delete the cache, this is only the app and the user data and I donยดt use other browser except for testing:Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite
MIUI 13
Android 12
6.1.3035.4
6.0.2980.48 -
@mib2berlin Mine also uses miui 14, android 13 system. But in all cases sync is disabled. But still, it is very annoying that the browser takes up much more space than another that also has synchronization disabled. And apart from that I don't even use Vivaldi that much, it's sporadically because if you use it a little, it's already big, imagine using it mainly. I am forced to stop using it.
I would like this to be resolved, because I wanted to make Vivaldi the default on the cell phone, but this is difficult

@Luartes
Hm, cache is variable, you can always cleaning that up.
I am curious about the user data, Chrome which I rarely use take more user data than my main browser Vivaldi.
I cant find a newer bug report about system memory usage on Android.
Maybe this is a Android 13 issues and I cant reproduce it on my Android 12 and 8.1 devices. One should report this as bug, maybe other tester/developer can reproduce it.
If I clear browsing data except passwords and cookies I get this:
This is fine to me.
For information on how to report a bug, see this URL:
https://help.vivaldi.com/article/report-a-bug-in-vivaldi-android/
Once that is done, please share the bug number (beginning with VBA-). Thanks.
On the form, you can add your email address. Once submitted, you'll get a confirmation. You can reply to this with any logs or further info.Cheers, mib

After my initial post, I believe that most of the data is being used for "cached" pages, cookies, and other web page-related information.
The fewer pages I have open, the less space it takes.
There is a setting to cache information for a certain period of time, so even if I close tabs it will still keep the cookies and cached information for the specified amount of time.
I can't say that's the cause of the issue, but so far it is consistent with my tests.
