How To: Share Tabs Between Devices / Send Tab to Computer

@HikariWS
Hi, I guess such a syncing system will never work 100% for everyone.
Dropbox or Google Drive are not working correctly too but what you are mentioned about loosing tabs after you send it to other device sounds really like a but to me.
I donΒ΄t use it often but maybe you report it.Cheers, mib

I also don't see how I can force it to sync. I waited some minutes and it wasn't automatically updated either.
You can load vivaldi://sync-internals and on that page there is a button called "Trigger Get Updates" which will initiate a sync. You can see the status of the sync on that page as well, and drill down into all sorts of details, even the nitty gritty of each batch that gets uploaded during a sync process in the traffic log.
Naturally, in order for instance A to pick up any changes from instance B, instance B needs to complete its sync successfully to upload them to the server. Then instance A needs complete its sync successfully to pick up the changes from the server.
@HikariWS said in How To: Share Tabs Between Devices / Send Tab to Computer:
if I don't have access to the other device ATM to click on its notification, the tab isn't opened and is lost.
The notification only occurs when the target instance syncs to pick up the tabs that you sent. It'll display a notification for each tab that was sent. If you're not at the machine when it syncs and displays the notification onscreen, it'll remain in the notifications area.
On Windows there is an icon in the system tray that you can click to see all the unseen notifications (from any app). Clicking on the notification in that list will open the tab just as if you clicked the onscreen popup notification. On Linux it depends on what desktop environment or window manager you're using and how you've configured it to handle notifications.
On Android it'll remain in the notifications at the top of the screen. You can pull that down and tap the notification to open it in the browser.
So nothing is lost, just find the notifications as I described above. A quick word of warning: on Windows there is a limit of 20 notifications per app. So if you send more than 20 tabs then you will not be able to see some of them. This is a limitation of the OS, however, and there's really nothing Vivaldi can do about it. I'm not sure what the limit is on Android, or if such a limit exists.

@mib2berlin I think this was just a case of user education. I'm not certain there's a bug here.
I can perhaps edit the OP to include this as an addendum. Since the OP is pretty long already, maybe it's best to insert a note with a link to my previous reply rather than try to add another half dozen paragraphs or so. That way the OP remains manageable for first time readers, yet the information is readily accessible from it as well. I'll think on it while I take care of some important work on the house this evening and update it later tonight or tomorrow.

Tnx
Get Udates seems to download remote changes from server, but doesn't upload local changes. The only way I had found to send local updates is the Send To context menu command.

Yeah I noticed it, at first I thought it'd time out if not interacted with.
I found Windows notifications, I'll look how it works on Android. I think Vivaldi could have this internally instead of relying on a OS feature, like a panel.
Anyway, this is good enough for me
I just need to use the Send To only when I'm home, and keep a tab until I move it. Besides that, if I can see the tabs my other devices have opened and open any of them locally, that helps a lot!
I'm gonna install and setup Vivaldi on phone and try it out

@HikariWS Local tabs are never synced, there's no need for that. The cloud icon will show you the remote tabs from other instances of Vivaldi, but only after the remote instances complete their syncs successfully first (to upload changes), and then the local instance completes its sync successfully (to download the changes).

Sorry I don't understand what u mean with local tabs. All my tabs on 3 devices and 4 windows are being synced.
I'd just rather have an easier button to command a sync now, and a more reliable way to store a received tab (it's good that it doesn't automatically open).
On Android vivaldi://sync-internals seems to not work and I haven't found another way to force sync, neither how to send a tab from there to another device. But if I wait it gets synced and receives tabs, and I can just keep a tab opened until I get back to PC and then see Android's opened tabs and bring any I need.
There are other more advanced features I'd like to have, but it's alrdy the best solution I had seen on any browser

@HikariWS By local tabs I mean your current session is not affected by the sync. Sync internals works fine for me on Android.

Any way to sync all Android tabs without having to go to each one individually? I have about 200 open on Android, as I had the intention of transferring them all over to my desktop. But seem as though I have to go and tap on a tab on Android to sort of wake it up for sync'ing over to the desktop. Then it shows up in my cloud icon on the desktop.
Would be great to get all of the tabs in one fell swoop!

@mrvreg
Hi, check the cloud icon right top near the trash can, there are all devices listed and you can "Open all" from your Android device.
By the way, sync is not working at moment.
I guess the admins are working on it, as usual on Sunday morning.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Hello, is that nowadays no more extra steps requires in order to send tab from desktop to Android handheld?
Just by installing latest version, setup sync from desktop is okay?
I have issue from day one until now unable to right click send tab as I do not see my Android device have there.
Thank you very much.

Hi, no extra steps needed but it need some time to get all synced.
I had to wait several hours to get a mobile device pop up in the list once.
You can restart your mobile to get a fresh complete sync or open vivaldi://sync-internals
and click Stop sync button. It should be restart sync automatically.
On PC restart Vivaldi is enough.Cheers, mib

Hi,
After those steps, if necessary,
Go to Settings > Sync >Reset Sync Server Data
and restart the Browsers - It will keep local Data -.Then reenable Sync.
Before, You can BackUp your current Profile on Desktop following the Tip, and the Android one if it's Rooted or has a Manufacture's Root BackUp App.

"Off Topic Tip"
Follow the Signature's Backup | Reset link.
Take the opportunity to start a Backup plan and even create a Template Profile.

hi @mib2berlin !
thanks for your help back in December. seems that i'm still not getting full sync'ing. only some tabs from my android are getting to the "cloud" on my mac. the cloud icon works at the top right.....just that it's telling me only 18 tabs on my android. but i know i have close to 100. yes, lots, i know. a big part of why i was hoping to sync, in full. so that i could pare that number down more easily from my computer.
not sure if this is related..... but interestingly, on my android for the last couple of weeks..... when i go to a webpage in vivaldi, the tabs that i have open speed-scroll from right to left (just the tab bar is scrolling/racing by). the page i am opening still opens, albeit slowly. and the tab bar racing along is rather distracting.
first world problems. but any thoughts on what might be going on?
hoping to avoid a full-on "close all tabs" on android. and hoping to also avoid having to tap into each open tab individually (on android).
thanks!
-
@mib2berlin a quick update..... i saw that i was getting a "upload conflict with another client's data" or something like that. so i did a reset sync data on both the android and the mac. and now it tells me "Success" on the mac for both upload and download. but still only syncing a handful of tabs, that i have tapped to open and therefore reload on android. hmmmm

@mrvreg
Hi, I use 1-3 tabs on Android and rarely more than 20 on desktop but I start a test with 20 tabs on desktop. Waiting now for syncing to Android then I will try to sync back to desktop.
I have 4 tabs open on Android but there is only one showing up on the desktop after 10 minutes. I will wait for the next hour or so and give you feedback then.Cheers, mib
EDIT: The 20 tabs shows up immediately on my second desktop, something is wrong.
EDIT2: After restart my mobile a second time all tabs from my mobile are showing up on my desktop. Seams to work only if you restart your mobile or need weeks to update.
EDIT3: Desktop open all tabs in a new window, this is not the expected action. -
It's 2021. Is there better doc on how sync'ed tabs are supposed to work?
On Android, when I right click address bar the share option brings up the standard Android share dialog, the only appearance of vivaldi is for 'vivaldi print', and is pdf related.

I really hope future update send tab to devices come standard out of the box so that we do not need to do any extra setting.
I can ever use this function from my Vivaldi desktop from a right click. It's just nothing in there in the right click conext menu I can see if I can send the tab to my Android Vivaldi.
Thank you very much.

Hi, then sync is not working correctly, RMB menu shows both of my mobiles.
Open vivaldi://sync-internals and hit ""Request start" button, it restart sync.
In the tab "Sync Node Browser" is device info, there are all synced devices listed.
To get a real restart on mobile restart the device.
This is a known issue and the team is working on it.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Thanks !!!
Below is what I can see.
Also, what you meant " In the tab Sync Node Browser" ........." cannot catch you meaning.
Thank you very much.

@eeeemc
For me it looks like:Ignore the red lines.
I meant to open it at your desktop system but does not matter, the list should be the same on both.Cheers, mib
