Very high GPU on a lot of sites
-
hello,
I started to have the issue that Vivaldi does have a high GPU usage on video playback which made it not possible to watch YouTube or Twitch with Vivaldi anymore.
Later on I wiped my drive and completely reinstalled macOS Mojave (10.14.6).
Now with a fresh OS and Vivaldi installation I'm still getting a very high GPU usage and even on a lot of websites which currently don't have any videos running.Here is an example with the reddit main page:
No extensions or settings have been changed and I didn't have that issue at the beginning, the issue did show up at some point but I don't remember what I updated at that time.
Versions:
MacBook Air, macOS Version 10.14.6 (Build 18G95)
Vivaldi 2.8.1657.8 (Official Build) (64-bit) -
@SirWill Hi. Thanks for the report. FYI, I already have a few bugs open for this and a few other related issues. I don't know when a fix will be ready but the developers are working on it.
-
@xyzzy is there any way I can keep track on this issue and know when it's fixed? Because until that's fixed I can't use Vivaldi.
-
@SirWill Thanks for reaching out and sorry for the trouble. Please file a bug report, it will be added as a duplicate to the first report and once it gets fixed and released on Vivaldi stable version, an automatic email is sent to inform you about it.
If you report it, please share the VB-number you receive via email here so we can easily follow it up internally.
Thanks in advance for your help

@SirWill The Vivaldi team knows that this (and problems with proprietary video playback in general) is a huge issue for some Mac users. I got confirmation that the devs are actively working on a fix.

Currently, the only way is for you to file your own bug report for this issue. We can then set things up so that you get notified when the bug gets fixed in a Stable release.

I filed a bug report and the id is VB-57479.
-
2.8.1664.32 is the latest snapshot available to me and it seems to be a lot better but video playback still takes 3-4x more then Safari.
-
@gaelle hey,
I've filled a bug for pretty similar thing, though I am not sure if it is the same.
In my case Vivaldi switches to the high performance GPU (Radeon 560) instead the integrated Intel 630, this leads to massive battery drain.

What is the status on this issue?
It's still impossible to use any site with video playback on macOS without it overheating. -
Vivaldi is still not useable with any videos, gifs or website animations.

@SirWill
Hi and cool, I use Vivaldi on 5 different systems for video, gifs and webpage animation for five years now.
May you can give some information about OS, GPU, Driver, Vivaldi version and an example page or it will never change for you.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin The first post already has most of the information you mentioned and a bug report was created.
If no one communicates with me and asks for the missing information then there is nothing I can provide.
I asked few months ago about the status on the issue but got no response here.Updated information:
Issue is most noticeable in any twitch.tv stream or YouTube video with at least 1080p and fast image changes.
Issue also happens on a lot of sites which have videos as backgrounds or animations. Example: https://www.greenwoodcampbell.comVivaldi version is 2.10.1745.27 now.

Here are few screenshot showing the issue:

@SirWill
Hi, I am sorry, I am sometimes a bit annoyed reading "Not usable" or something.
My system is quiet similar to yours except Linux and HD 4000 and it seams your GPU acceleration is not working in Vivaldi on OSX.
I have about 30-40% CPU usage watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aR8tNInH0s in full screen mode, which is the same as Safari on your system.
Is acceleration enabled at vivaldi://settings/webpages/ ?CHeers, mib

@SirWill Have you checked for background applications and/or malware?
Especially check for BitCoin mining in the browser. There are security add-ons that will block them.
I use Nano Ad Blocker and Nano Defender.
You can get custom blocking lists at filerlists dot com. -
Just remember that Chromium's hardware acceleration is somewhat different on every platform.
Vivaldi also uses the macOS platform libraries for decoding media, and those also decode in GPU hardware whenever possible to save power. Both of these are reasons why you may see more GPU activity on process monitoring tools on macOS.I have also noticed that the macOS video decoders also have problems with some streams on twitch.tv , depending on how it was encoded at the source.
Another thing to keep in mind: when you are looking at Chromium's GPU process in the Vivaldi Task Manager, it is nothing more than a special renderer process that has the privileges needed to access GPU resources. This process is actually running on the CPU, not the GPU.

@mib2berlin It doesn't make a big difference with it enabled or not. Your linked video runs at 24 FPS and not 60, a better Video to test it on is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jsjtt5dWDYU
@greybeard I reinstalled the system multiple times and tried snapshot builds without extensions and default setting.

@SirWill
Hi, I am not able to play the video you linked at 4K on my hardware, not with Vivaldi nor with Chrome or Firefox. This is also the line of performance, best is Vivaldi than Chrome ...Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin I'm not running at 4k. I'm running it at 1080p at 60 FPS and Vivaldi is at 180-200% CPU usage, while Safari is at around 40%.
-
@SirWill
OK, checking HD 60 FPS and get ~40% CPU usage, does not matter if HW accelerate is en/disabled.
Chrome is the same, may it is really a OSX Vivaldi bug.
May you make another bug report for the new Vivaldi version.CHeers, mib
