Password inquired always on launch and also afterwards
-
I have a problem with Vivaldi 2.5 in Ubuntu 18.04. Every time I start the browser it inquires the password by reason that some keyring has not been loaded. This can happen also in the midst of viewing a web page. This is so annoying as to make the browser useless if there is no fix. It accepts cancel also, but often it has to be pressed several times to get rid of the dialog.
The same thing also happened with Chromium, which I tried and rejected before this one, but never with Firefox.

Do you have autologin on?
-
I am the only user in my system, and I think I have only one password. I haven't changed anything there since the purchase of my ready-installed desktop.
Yes, lamarca, I have had autologin on because nobody else can access my computer, and I don't want to go through the login process at every startup. I tried Vivaldi with autologin disabled, and then it starts without inquiries, but this is not a solution, as the trouble is only moved to another instant.

It's new for me. Vivaldi requests a password one time.
Please, open the terminal and issue the following command:/usr/bin/vivaldi-stable --user-data-dir="/tmp/VIV-TST" &
It's a temporary install (it won't messed up your system wide instalation). If Vivaldi runs with no passwd problem, then the issue lies on your profile.
-
I'm quite a newbie with Linux and hesitate to run commands that I don't fully understand. What is a temporary install? Does this install something? What does the '&' mean at the end? Can you elaborate what happens, and can somebody else confirm that this is safe?
-
@mere It runs Vivaldi and selects
/tmp/VIV-TST
as a profile folder — it'll be removed after you restart computer because it's in/tmp/
. The&
at the end means Vivaldi will start in background — you can remove it, but you won't be able to use the terminal window until you close Vivaldi.And don't close the terminal window until you exit Vivaldi — closing terminal kills all subprocesses.

@mere In a few words: it's a virtual installation, that is totally purged from the system, as soon as Vivaldi is turned off. The switch
--user-data-dir=
can use any path
The ampersand is necessary to release the terminal after issuing {{most of command}}
Well ..... It's the only way to be sure your profile foder has no issue. -
@mere
Just for the records:In general, some users believe the issue can be fix by uninstalling Vivaldi. It might or not might ~~be~ solve the issue.
- Vivaldi is installed at [[ /opt/vivaldi or /opt/vivaldi-snapshot ]]
- After the 1st run, the second and last folder is created at you home: ~/.config/vivaldi or ~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot
No matter how method is used to remove Vivaldi (UI or command line), delete the manually the aforementioned folders before installing, otherwise, the re-install will inherit
badcorrupted&bad data from the previous installation.Edited twice: grammar

I ran the above command and closed the browser three times, but only in the first opening it asked password. There were also a handful of error messages which I can post if needed.
-
@mere Vivaldi always prints messages on Terminal, ignore them. Of course you can post them
Did you reproduce the issue? The command line can be whenever you want. The important step is to make sure the issue is not present.
Sorry for the late reply. -
I also made some surfing with that 'virtual' browser, and the issue didn't occur there.
