Profiles open as empty windows
-
Have this exact same issue. The workaround eventually worked, though I had to close the one close-able profile window and quit-restart multiple times before I stopped getting an empty window.
As a new user, should I expect such an issue would get resolved in future updates?

@seancote Yes. VB-52612 has been confirmed internally and the devs are looking into it.

Is there any news about this issue?
Currently, I'm stuck with an empty window, which doesn't go away after how many quit & relaunch cycles. I'm just hoping that a future update will revive this zombie profile. I just hate to delete it and lose all customizations and cookies.
I'm always on the latest snapshot of Vivaldi.

This problems has become worse in recent snapshots.
- With multiple profiles open, quit Vivaldi.
- Launch Vivaldi again.
- One or more of the Vivaldi windows are blank (empty, gray).
- Quit Vivaldi again.
- A lot of Vivaldi processes stay behind and all you can do is to
killall -KILL Vivaldi
on the terminal. The normal "quit" doesn't work. - Launch Vivaldi again. Vivaldi seems fine. Nothing seems to have been lost.
Before this, item 5 didn't happen: Vivaldi peacefully quitted and launching it again restored one or more of the previously-empty profile windows.
Item 5 happens, perhaps once in two times, by my subjective statistics
I suspect that this problem is related to the empty-window problem, just because the normal quit always works, except in this situation.

@ryofurue Thanks very much for the update. I have had a bug open for this issue for ages and I know that there are several duplicates. However, I'm not sure what's happening that would now be causing issue #5. Once I track down the active "master" bug, I'll add a comment linking to this thread.

@ryofurue FYI, your bug, VB-52612, is still open and Confirmed. If you still have the original confirmation email, you can update your bug with these new details by replying to that confirmation email. If you prefer, I can also update the bug for you.

Thank you, xyzzy, for your help. Yes, I'd appreciate it if you could update the existing bug report for me. I don't think I have the original email message.

I have found a ridiculous workaround. Every time you open, one profile in one window will open correctly. So you close that one. Then you quit vivaldi, repeat until you have one profile only, then it will open it correctly, and from the profile popup you can open the other ones just fine.
I have 3 profiles so I do this:- open vivaldi
- close the "good" window
- quit vivaldi
- open vivali
- close the "good" window
- close vivaldi
- open vivaldi, boom, one profile working fine
- open the 2 other profiles
I am on a OS X, I am guessing this works across others.

Yes, this is a longstanding problem and does exist not only on MacOS but Windows 10 as well. It is very annoying and you would think the developers would fix it with high priority because it makes profiles almost unusable but they rather focus on cosmetic improvements to the browser. I guess it's too hard to fix... so just don't even try.

Has this problem been fixed?
I keep using two profiles and used to have this problem all the time. But, for a month or two, I haven't seen it. Whenever I open Vivaldi, the two windows open without any problems.
I use Vivaldi Snapshot. It's automatically updated.
I use macOS Big Sur. I keep updating it as updates come in.
