How do I get a Youtube downloader?
-
@lanternland videodownloadhelper works in firefox for me - gives options of versions of the video to download so I can choose mp4 and have it turn up in Plex media player (or open with mpv - the best for opening files from disk).
To be honest, to simply open Youtube I use a chromium shortcut (opens as an app window)... but then when downloading is interesting it's Firefox. I'm not keen on Palemoon - I tried it, but it's based on very old Firefox code...
Anyway, the SIMPLEST way to do this (and I just tested it again - and it worked) is to pause your video, then replace the initial addressbar text with SSyoutube.com. Works with any browser...
Make sure to delete from the '.' in front of .youtube.com so you replace 'https://www.' with ss - then you get a website offering you a green download button.
I just put slimjet on, and must say it's pretty slick as a youtube downloader... though the tabs are completely white (white text on white tab) even when set to GTK+ theming so that sucks.
Best player for video is MPV (also the basis for Plex Media Player if you have the server installed) which also works for music too... though I prefer Audacious for music, it allows me to drag 'keepers' into my picard app which checks tags, renames, and moves them to my music library folder (so it then turns up in 'clementine' - my computer's jukebox/lyrics display as well as plex media player). Best features of MPV - unless you mess with settings it opens fastest, resizes with no borders (i.e. it's just basically video display with no borders, just titlebar visible - no menus or visible controls) - great for 'always on top' video hovering over the page as you're busy typing.
