No video on Youtube
-
I am having a "classic" issue in Vivaldi: no video on certain sites, like twitter or some from youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r3fe0VRej0). I accesed already the experimental settings and spent many hours testing all kind of flags and changes. I'm kind of tired. I wanted to switch from Maxthon to Vivaldi as my default browser but right now I'm very dissapointed.

@xvision Hi this might sound stupid but do yo use by any means a "windows 10 N" or "win 10 KN" version?
EDIT: If the answer is yes please install this windows codec pack https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3010081/media-feature-pack-for-windows-10-n-and-windows-10-kn-editions
EDIT 2: As explanation: those win versions have not much media stuff installed - if you use chrome it doesn't affect you because chrome is so damn rich they can buy all those licences and install them with their software so you won't notice but for every other software you'll need the microfsoft codecs
-
@zaibon It is not stupid at all in fact, yes, it is a windows N and I buyed it on purpose (with the silly hope that I would protect my privacy a bit better, sic!).
But I downloaded the windows codec pack and it didn't fix it cause it doesn't allow me to install it I'm trying to fix that aswell
Edit: I changed some of my windows tweaks for privacy and I was able to download media codecs. No changes at all

@xvision Mmmh okay, so as an additional question: Which videos work for you on the testside below?
https://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html -
-
@xvision
^^ sorry my bad I explained it wrong - please scroll a bit down below "Testcases" there should be listed testvideos for- H.264/MP4
- WebM
- Ogg/Theora
Which of them work for you if anything at all is going to play?
-
@xvision Which videos work for you on the testside below?
The 1st video is the only one that matters.
-
@zaibon Only the 2nd and 3rd one work, not the 1st one
-
@zaibon Thanks for caring about my case. Really. Is there anything else I can do?
-
@xvision Hi and sorry for my late reply. To be honest the missing media codec was my best guess at this, especially as firefox has the same problem on your laptop as vivaldi. And the fact that only h264 isn't playing for you (the only closed properitary media format on that site)n is pointing in that direction too.
So maybe somebody else has some more ideas and can chime in?
Oh and I know this is annoying but could you please check again and make sure that the correct codec is installed? Merci -
@zaibon Ok. Thanks a lot anyway. I'll keep the thread updated if I have news, to help others btw.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Good point. Yep, I installed klite just to try if that could help. Usually I didn't need them cause I use Gom as my video player because it already has almost all codecs I may need. I will uninstall Klite and install the MS ones (although I don't really like that). Is it really necesseary to install the player too? I would try to avoid it as muchs as possible because of privacy issues and also because it tends to stay active as a service in the system
-
@Gwen-Dragon SUCCESS!! Every video I tried from different sites works now.
As suspected, it was the lack of windows media codecs, and like everything related to M$, it was a real pain in the ass to install, so I will explain it briefly here if thaat help to others:
-
I had already a windows media package which I suspected it didn't install correctly, but because of the same reason, it didn't show up in the list of installed packages so it was impossible to uninstall
-
So my next plan was to update it. I found the original microsoft page with the list of all wmp versions: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3145500/media-feature-pack-list-for-windows-n-editions in which you are supposed to download the right one for the version of your windows. The problem is that windows info window does not use the same numbers as the ones in microsoft page (sic) so you don't know what real version of windows you own.
-
So the trick is a hit and miss, downloading all versions from the oldest to the newest one, because anyone that not "belongs" to your windows version will tell you during the installation that it cannot get installed.
-
When you find the right one, it will download and install additional packages during the installation process, and ask you to reboot when it seems to finish. It will perform additional installations during the rebooting process, but in the end, when you open Vivaldi, every video works!
Now I just finished the process, so I will test if I can uninstall some bloatware, and possible compatibility with K-lite codec pack, because I will surely miss some codecs and most important form me: thumbnails for all kind of video files, cause if you don't have them, it is really difficult to recognize and classify your ideo collections.
Thanks to all who helped me with this, and as soon as I check what wmp elements I can uninstall and/or what alternative codecs I can install, I will update info here.
Cheers!

-
@xvision Thanks for the update, glad that it works for you now. And thanks for the description of your install process.
-
@zaibon Not at all. Thanks to the vivaldi community for being so supportive.
@thread I can confirm I could uninstall windows media player, with no apparent effect on vivaldi, and I could also install some codecs and utilities from k-lite without any issue.
@vivaldi devs: Thanks a lot for your wonderful job. A browser like this was much needed. And please: give the android version some priority. Please please please. I really need to integrate my mobile & desktop navigation
