problem installing 2.3.1440.41 (32-bit) deb on PuppyLinux (TrustyTahr)
-
Odd problem - might not occur on other systems, mine's a bit nonstandard.
Just downloaded and tried to install the latest 32-bit .deb for 2.3.1440.41 - but it refused to install on my PuppyLinux (basically TrustyTahr). No errors other than "unable to install".
So I unpacked the .deb and found it has control.tar.xz & data.tar.xz while the previous version has control.tar.gz data.tar.xz.
This may or may not be the root of the problem, but it was pretty much the only difference I could find.
Maybe there's a newer standard for packing the contents of .deb files that Puppy Tahr doesn't implement, so I'll take that to the Puppy forums for comment.
Installed fine on a later Puppy based on Xenial, btw.
But, thought this was worth throwing out there for the Viv community to be aware of.
(I've installed it on my Tahr setup just by unpacking the deb and copying over the existing files to /usr and /opt, & it works fine)

I've established this is a problem with Puppy Tahr, which uses dpkg-deb v.1.17.5 and that seems to choke on a .deb with a xz compressed contents.
Puppy Xenial ships with dpkg-deb 1.18.4 and that works fine with xz compression. -
@irritable Hi, just for the records:
On the first install Vivaldi adds automatically the its repo at /etc/apt/sources.list.d- vivaldi.list --> stable
- vivaldi-snapshot.list --> snapshot
Check for updates using UI or via command line:
$ sudo apt-get update

@lamarca
Sorry rather a late reply.
This is useful info for vanilla Ubuntu users.
Puppy Linux doesn't use apt, so doesn't help in that particular case. -
@irritable Hello there,
All do you need is a xz compression file? If yes, have a look at this script, coded by our Linux Wizard. Just a warning: run at your own risk.
Keep in touch. -
