Research minerblock / miner block extension performance lockup
-
Hi all,
Thanks for software
Hope you're well
As title
I'm using minerblock / miner block extension[n] with a test page[e] and experiencing a complete browser lockup. I believe I have experienced the issue on other website pages but finally discovered the cause today. A lot of console activity, naturally, but I'm unable to reproduce the performance hit (e.g. scroll / find in page) in Google Chromium/Chrome which hinged my decision to report here first; before the extension creator.
Screen cast: https://drive.google.com/open?id=167r5DTDP4tQ8yiNiUPKE_m-ZMn8hFJkh
Can anyone reproduce this issue in Vivaldi?:
If yes, I'll submit a bug report
If you're reading and:
a) agree, then please up-vote and/or reply +1, or;
b) disagree, then I'd love to know why?If you have any issues (e.g. questions/queries) happy to help
Hope this helps and to hear back!
Cheers

@ldexterldesign Installed extension to test this.
No problems on the test page you provided (what should this extension do on wiki page? ).
As an aside, you don't mention your vivaldi version or any other extensions.
You also don't say if disabling/removing this extension solves your lock-up problems.Note: I'm on Linux, not a MAC - could this be MAC specific?

Hi @TbGbe,
Thanks for reply
No problems on the test page you provided (what should this extension do on wiki page? )
The extension's a crypto currency miner blocker so, although it spews a load of stuff in console which I may consult the extension creator about, it should return nothing on the test page; since wikipedia doesn't mine coins
As an aside, you don't mention your vivaldi version or any other extensions
Apologies, skipped this part of my template
hardware: Apple, MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)]
software - operating system: Apple, macOS, 10.14.2 (18C54)
software - application: Vivaldi, 2.2.1388.37 (Stable channel) (64-bit)You also don't say if disabling/removing this extension solves your lock-up problems
Disabling/removing the extension nullifies the issue, as per the screen cast
Could this be MAC specific
Anyone?
If you have any issues (e.g. questions/queries) happy to help
Thanks

@ldexterldesign I installed this extension and don't have problems on the test page you provided or others pages, bar some minor scrolling issues (some pages don't scroll very well with the extension enabled), but not a browser lockup.
MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015 / macOS 10.12.6 Sierra / Vivaldi 2.3.1401.7

Hi @hlehyaric,
Thanks for reply
If you're willing to keep the extension installed for a few days and report back that would be useful, and to anyone else reading this
... some minor scrolling issues (some pages don't scroll very well with the extension enabled)
NB Perhaps this is memory related - please ensure you test with a few windows and/or tabs active/open
FYI It's the only miner blocker extension I could find that worked comprehensively and it's open source so a worthy addition to your extensions IMO
Yours hopefully

@ldexterldesign You could also add filter lists in uBlock origin (or other adblocker extensions) to block crypto-mining.
-
@hlehyaric interesting, please point me at some documentation as I do run that extension
Yours hopefully

Assuming you kept the extension installed have you encountered any other issues?
Seems to be site specific to https://en.wikipedia.org for me
I installed this extension and don't have problems on the test page you provided or others pages, bar some minor scrolling issues (some pages don't scroll very well with the extension enabled), but not a browser lockup.
Today, it occurred to me to use quick commands (i.e. cmd + e) with the test page and this issue impacts that too which indicates this is a wider issue than the DOM window - should extensions have the ability to mess with anything outside the DOM window?
Yours hopefully
