Research crashes

@gwen-dragon yes, https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/254656

Curious to know if this issue was diagnosed/fixed - assuming blog snapshots[s] is the correct place to look I can't find anything relevant?
Hope to hear back

@Gwen-Dragon great, no issues since; just curious. Thanks.

The find in page bug is back and it's crashing my browser

It's unclear to me if crashes and freezes are related. I added what I'm seeing in v2.3 (and just that version) to the second thread that you linked to above.
-
Ahh, unless I'm mistaken the "find in page" issue is a regression[r] Vivaldi is aware of:
[Regression] Vivaldi hangs by find-in-page under certain conditions (VB-49066)
Regards
-
@ldexterldesign That was about the hang version of the problem. There's a full-blown crash version of the problem also going around.
-
Issue still not fixed
This time, rather than a crash I get a perpetual spinning beachball (I waited 5 mins). No crash so no crash report; I had to force quit.
If I can be of further assistance then please let me know
Like many others, I really need this fixed - it's killing my productivity and I'm seriously having to consider other browsers
Is there a stable Vivaldi version I can revert to (i.e. something before 2018-11-19)?:
If yes, where's the download
Hope this is useful
Regards

@ldexterldesign Thanks for the report. FYI, this issue has already been confirmed internally. However, it doesn't seem to reproduce consistently.
Do you have specific steps that trigger this glitch or does the lock-up only occur randomly?
-
Hi @xyzzy,
Thanks for reply
url: http://gqueues.com/*
find in page occurrences: 19
find in page bug occurred at: 4/19That's all I can think's relevant
I suggest you start building a schema for people to complete if they don't have a crash report that way you can start building a clearer picture if you aren't already
Regards
-
@xyzzy Is it Mac only (as of this release)? Maybe a coincidence, but mentions of this that I've seen so far have been.
-
@rseiler Version 2.3.1440.57 and the recent 2.4 snapshots should have fixed the "Find in Page" crashes. So far, only a few people have reported Vivaldi freezing with these recent builds... and it's actually really tricky (for me anyway) to get this remaining glitch to trigger.
I was able to reproduce it on macOS and we've already identified where in the code that the freeze occurred. However, I don't think that the developers have isolated the root cause yet. Once they do, it should be a very quick fix.

What's the status?
Still a find issue, still beach-balling forcing me to quit
Yours hopefully

@ldexterldesign I'll look into this. To the best of my knowledge, all Find in Page freezes have been resolved and should not occur in any of the current builds.
If Vivaldi should ever freeze like this again, please do the following:
- Launch "Activity Monitor" and search for Vivaldi
- Look for a Vivaldi process that's consuming 100% CPU. Click that line to select it, then click on the "gear icon" and select "Sample Process" from the dropdown menu.
- When the sample completes, click the "Save..." button
- Open a bug report and provide as much information as you can about your current configuration (including extensions that you have installed) and the specific actions that triggered the freeze. Reply to the confirmation email and attach the text file from the "Sample Process" output.
Thanks!

@ldexterldesign A few months ago, you mentioned that the "Reading Time" extension triggered a crash: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/254399
Are you still using this and have you tried disabling this extension again to see if it eliminates the freeze? (The extension itself could be what's getting into an infinite loop when traversing nodes.)

@ldexterldesign Are you reporting a crash where Vivaldi dies (and macOS opens a dialog saying, "Vivaldi has quit unexpectedly. ... Ignore / Report... / Reopen) or a freeze (also called a hang) where the application just gets stuck and "beachballs"?
Today's Snapshot contained a fix for VB-50025... a page freeze that was triggered by a right-click... but that doesn't sound like the problem that you are reporting.
The recent "Find in Page" freeze was caused by this Chromium bug: https://crbug.com/889075
If one of your extensions contains a similar traversal bug, it could be causing your freezes.
The "Find in Page" freeze was widespread and affected users on all platforms. So far, we have not received any other reports of Vivaldi hanging or freezing, so it's possible that the problem that you are reporting is being caused by something specific to your installation.

When I originally created this forum post it was a crash but now it's a hang - both "Find in Page" connected. Please feel free to update the thread title to something more relevant/specific.

Hmm, I use an (Apple MacBook Pro) trackpad so...
