Antivirus Software
-
I am loving vivaldi and was just ready to fully convert over from firefox and chrome. then it occurred to me that I hadn't thought about supporting AV software. What are the solid suggestions in this area since i am not seeing vivaldi generally listed as a "supported" browser from AV vendors yet.

Hi, Vivaldi use the Safe Browsing API from Google as Chrome and Firefox does.
I have Windows Defender Browser Protection from Playstore as addition.
It use a different SmartScreen-Filter and a list of phishing and malware pages.
I am on Linux but this seams to work well and need low system resources.Cheers, mib

No problems with Panda AV, it recognize Vivaldi as valid browser and soft since v.1 three years ago.
Free version -
I am using Sophos Home Premium. Never an issue with Vivaldi.
Also Windows Defender Browser Protection, SpywareBlaster, uBlock Origin and VT(VirusTotal)Chromizer to check downloadds.
Yes, you could say I was a bit paranoid... -

Been using avast! for years. As far as a firewall goes Windows has a solid firewall.

@mib2berlin Oh, you were talking about the Chrome Web Store - at first, I thought you meant the Microsoft Store (I guess, I paid more attention to the "Windows Defender" part than the mention of Linux - sorry about that)...

Ublock Origin -nuff said.
Regarding AV, there's an interesting article from a former developer of Mozilla:
http://robert.ocallahan.org/2017/01/disable-your-antivirus-software-except.html
As an IT guy, I couldn't agree more. There's been many incidents where our VM environment breaks because some AV is preventing legit updates. I haven't installed any real antivirus for ages -- just need to exercise patience and general knowledge.

It may be true for users who do not use Windows, but going in Windows on the network without AV is reckless. Because Windows is remotely the most used OS, it is also the most attacked (~ 250,000 new viruses and malware daily).
All current AVs perform quite well, but the differences exist in some slow down the system and others do not, apart also that some offer compatibility problems with certain applications.
This is why it is important that each user first tests several AV before deciding on the one that best suits their needs and what they will be left with. Respecting an AV can lead to unpleasant surprises, due to muco knowledge and care. -
