Spell Check on Mac
-
I can confirm that on macOS there is no option "Spellcheck" as in the image no matter where I click. I can see the "Writing Direction" though. I've went to the language options in the settings and added another one (german) but I still don't get the option.
However I get suggestions for english words when I miss-spell them.macOS 10.14 ; Vivaldi 2.1.1337.36 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
-
Strange that it works fine on Ubuntu. The issue is only present on OSX for me.
-
@nelov I only see the "Spellcheck" option when I right click in the text field AND DO NOT have a mis-spelled word selected! i.e. Selecting a "correct word" or with no word selected at all.
-
-
@tbgbe That doesn't work as you can see in my screen shot. One is with a misspelled word and the other one without.
Thanks for the suggestion though! -
@lamarca When I go there I can only see a setting to change my default language for the whole browser (user interface language. I don't see an option to add other languages.
-
@nelov Select
vivaldi://settings/languages
right-click, and go to the URL. -
Hi everyone, I appreciate the help and quick answers.
However I already posted and showed that when I go to vivaldi://settings/languages I have added german. However I can't change the browser to show me german corrections.Maybe I get the whole thing wrong but I saw the screen shot where I can right click and get the option to change languages under the menu entry "Language settings". Mine is always empty as shown in the screens.
And you are also right about chrome & chromium I get the same thing there, so it's either an OS thing or I'm not getting how it should work at all.
At least it's safe to say it's not a vivaldi problem.Cheers!

@nelov Once dictionaries are installed you can select them from the text edit area right-click menu.
-
@nelov OK try step-by-check:-
Open chrome://settings/languages (note type chrome: NOT vivaldi: even though the page will show vivaldi: after loading )
Under "Language" - Check that German has been added (if not add it)
Then (on same page) Under "Spell Check" - Check that both English AND German are activeClose the settings page
Now check in a text field for the Language AND/OR spellcheck options. -
I don't have the options for spell checking at all, only the "offer to translate pages". German was added but I added it again...just because. Here is how it looks ->
Mod Edit: Image cropped for clarity

@nelov Can you see three vertical dots at the end of the Idioma line? I believe is the place where is Mr Terence has in his interface.
Gentlemen, 34 replies to add a language not to mention the image is too much. It's the last attempt
-
I can see them and when clicked I get the options to move down/up or remove a language.
Any way sorry for the trouble you can go ahed and close this thread. -
They make to be blue, can you do it?

@nelov Perhaps its your Theme, try change it.
-
@lamarca I changed the theme to the default one and I see no change.
They make to be blue, can you do it? - Sorry I don't get what you mean.
I strongly suspect macOS at fault and I see users on linux who have it working, so I'll try it out later when I'm at home.
This or maybe I have some setting or extension that prevents it from working. -
@nelov said in Spell check:

As in my previous post, the options are available from a text edit box.
They are not in Settings, User Interface Language as in your earlier screen shot.
This thread is about Windows. I cannot test for MacOS

Let me move you to the right category.

@nelov Spell checking on Mac is a bit broken; Vivaldi uses the native macOS dictionaries but has limited integration with the macOS platform itself. It can detect and flag spelling errors in multiple languages but suggestions for spelling corrections (I think) are only offered in the default system language. For example, my system language is set to English and as I type this, "etre" will get flagged as misspelled but if I right-click on the word, unlike TextEdit.app, it won't offer to correct it to "être". Vivaldi also does not have the usual "Spelling and Grammar" section under the Edit menu nor does it have an option to disable spell checking. All of these issues are longstanding bugs that need to be fixed.
