I can't really name an exact incident or condition that triggered these few occurrences. One thing though, they happened when I open vivaldi (not new tab, or not new window from an already running window, but when I open the application per se).
I didn't really take note of what else was going on in my PC. Next time it happens, I'll take notes.
I'm running Windows 10 Pro 1803.

Vivaldi programmers must know what triggers the request for new user.
That is not necessarily true. It could be chromium that triggers it for some reason, but it appears like a Vivaldi window because the Vivaldi team has said "the browser is called Vivaldi and uses this logo" (information that is probably used in many different locations).

It just happened on the newly downloaded 64-bit version. Windows 10 showed a notification available and I clicked on it. The notification was from Vivaldi which said there was another minor update so I clicked on it. The screen went back to my home page and no update occurred (normal). So I opened Vivaldi to get the update and it put the kitty user page on the screen. -

While it's an annoyance, the only important thing is for folks to know that if they see the kitty picture they should just left click on it and the browser will continue normally with nothing being lost or missing. -
@topcat7736 ah. That could be important to figuring it why this happened.
Was it a native Windows 10 notification? (ie was the background colour white or the same as your taskbar colour)
I've had strange behaviour occur due to native notifications before.

@lonm Vivaldi's updater always gives me native Windows 10 notifications. Clicking on them never does anything (as previous posters have also confirmed). I usually just click on the Vivaldi icon in the task bar instead.
Worth noting is that I have so far never had this user-select problem (though I'm on 1337.20 still, which could explain things if this is issue is related to later versions).Edit: Just updated to latest snapshot. No "select user" screen in sight. (Win 10 1803 x64).

So I opened Vivaldi to get the update and it put the kitty user page on the screen.A while back, Microsoft changed some things in their notification APIs that broke certain user interactions from the notification itself when some non-Microsoft apps send a notification. I believe MS is still 'putzing' around with the API from time to time, so YMMV in getting an apps update to actually occur when trying to trigger it off a Windows notification.
- In this latest episode, was your Vivaldi turned on and/or minimized when the notification occurred?
- If so, was it on its homepage when the notification and your subsequent update check both occurred, or did it revert to the homepage when you clicked the notification?
- Was this on your computer with 2 user accounts or one of your single-account ones?

1,2) Vivaldi wasn't started yet. Tell Vivaldi to open and the user page come up. Left click the kitty picture and the Vivaldi browser opens at my regular home page.
3) Occurs on all of them -
@topcat7736 It's probably worth a Vivaldi bug report here: https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/ From what you've described, it seems to involve a Vivaldi startup operation on some systems, and it could involve something in the underlying chromium engine. When you provide information/description for the bug report, reference this thread; once they send you an acknowledgement containing a VB number by eMail, please post that number here to get everything cross-linked. Given that it seems very difficult to reproduce for others and not many users are chiming in with similar problems, the devs may not be able to make much headway with it for a while.

Well, I've been able to get the user kitty many times but remembered what was occurring just before it shows up.
- Windows 10 shows that I have a new notification with the shaded box in the lower right corner of the screen.
- I click on it and it says I have a Facebook notification.
- I click on it to open the notification and the notification area disappears and I am on my regular Windows 10 startup screen.
- I open Vivaldi to get the Facebook notification and the Kitty page appears. I click on the Kitty and Vivaldi starts normally but does not go to the Facebook page.
So, it would appear that if a notification calls Vivaldi to start, the select a user Kitty picture occurs instead.
-
@topcat7736 I've noticed strange behaviour with vivaldi notifications on Win10 as well. If I click a notification it always starts a version I had installed in standalone mode, not my usual installed version.
