When adding bookmarks to menu, folders aren't sorted
-
When I add a bookmark to the flyout menu at the top (which I prefer to use rather than the sidebar), a dropdown list appears so I can select the folder for the new bookmark. However, the folders aren't in any order. The subfolders, on the other hand, are in alpha order. The sidebar is set to sort in alpha order. Is there a setting to fix it or is this a bug?

@kerampf The Bookmarks Bar has its own independent sort order. Right-click on any empty part of the bar to get the menu.
-
@pesala I'm not referring to the bookmarks bar, this pertains to the menus at the top -- I use the bookmarks flyout. Also this is not about keeping the bookmarks sorted, but the sort order of the folders when I add a bookmark. Ctrl-D to add a bookmark, then you get a dropdown to choose the folder you want the bookmark in, but that folder list isn't sorted in any manner.
-
@kerampf that dropdown seems to use the manual sort order.
I do not see an option to change the mode, but at least it is consistent with other representations of the same order type.
So the order can be changed to match personal preference via bookmark panel or tab (when they are set to manual sort as well). -
It is explicitly for this longterm problem that i keep the Recursive Bookmark Sorter extension installed & activated. I use it every so often to perform the correct alphabetic sort that sadly V does not fully do [in its Panel & Bookmarks Manager we can control the sorting, but these seem not to extend to the dropdown BM saver accessed via Address Field icon]. Each time i run RBS it fully sorts ALL bm's & folders, & this corrected sequence does then show in that dropdown. It will be nice once i can eventually not need this extension.

@steffie Thanks for the suggestion to try the Recursive Bookmark Sorter extension, unfortunately it didn't correct the folder order in my dropdown list, which is odd since it works for you. Hopefully at some point the Vivaldi team will look into it. (Sorry for the long delay, for some reason I haven't been getting notified of replies.)

Oh golly, that really is weird, isn't it? I've used this extension in my V for basically almost all of the time that V has supported Chrome Extensions, & it has been utterly reliable for me.
On the day i saw your earlier query, i specifically retested its correct functionality before i posted my reply to you, to ensure i'd not be deceiving you [i created a new dummy folder in the BM Manager, dragged it to be conspicuously out of alphabetical sequence, inspected the address bar BM dropdown & confirmed it was also out of sequence therein, auto-sorted the BM Manager with its native functionality, confirmed said folder was then in proper sequence in BM Manager but still disordered in the BM dropdown, then clicked "my" extension, rechecked the dropdown, & confirmed it was now all correctly sorted. I actually did this test twice].
Given that i use Linux whereas unfortunately you use Windows, i suppose one possible hypothesis is that somehow something about the Windows version of V stops that extension fully functioning. This sounds implausible to me, but who knows?
I use Snapshot, not Stable [which is also installed, & has that extension too (which i presumed to be also correctly working there), but i've not explicitly done The test there too. As i rarely use Stable, i can't positively assure you that it works identically to Snapshot wrt this extension]. Which V do you use?
Another possibility could be that something in your V profile is corrupt. If you were sufficiently keen you could test that by closing V, temporarily renaming your profile Default folder, launch/close V again [to create a new virgin profile], copy your original profile's
Bookmarks
file into this virgin profile, launch V & reinstall that extension to retest. If you are of a pessimistic bent [like Moi] & worried that the BM file itself is corrupt, you could "sanitise" it by exporting it from V as an html file, then import it back in to create a new file of the proper type & format. -
@steffie Ah-ha, this time I saw the reply! I have a couple of other bookmark sorter extensions installed (Sprucemarks and Supersorter), which also didn't do the trick, but they've never fully worked right on Vivaldi so that's probably some type of compatibility issue. (They might work for you, however, and they have more options than the Recursive Bookmark Sorter.) My computer has a slowly growing list of odd and almost certainly unrelated software (or possibly OS-related) problems, so yes, the issue might lie in some quirk in my computer. I'm not going to bother trying to test for corrupt files (I had a horrible experience trying to restore my Vivaldi bookmarks some time ago, definitely not going there!), I'll just hope that someday the dev team looks into this folder sorting problem. Thanks though!

Since it is you who recommends this I will try it. I will not hold you responsible if it doesn't work on Win10.
This is one reason I never migrated to Opera 13 and later. Once they got bookmarks in you could not sort.
At the time I had some 3,500 but culled them down to 2,400±.
Even in FF I had to use SQlite to order properly, then they [EXPLITAVEd] that up.
Apparently bookmarks are no longer a priority.
So what happens when the pendulum swings the other way?
For some of us our research tools are valuable and we really depend on and need our Bookmarks. -

Hear hear on that. I probably have 300-400 bookmarks, not nearly as much as you but still essential to my research. It's very frustrating not to have good bookmark management tools. I can't use Microsoft Edge at all because bookmark system is so horrible, and there doesn't even seem to be a workaround.
