[win7/gtx1070] Youtube's VP9 hardware acceleration not working

Hi everybody.

I wonder if VP9 hardware acceleration is working for you at all? On my computer VP9 is CPU decoded, which results in lots of dropped frames. If I tur hardware acceleration completely then the image get choppy as hell - with acceleration enabled it is quite smooth, but frames are dropped.

When I look at GPUZ's (graphic card monitoring tool) sensor section I can see that the video decoding engine isn't being used at all with VP9. After forcing youtube to use h264 video decoding engine is used properly by Vivaldi.

I tried different versions of Vivaldi, to no avail - VP9 is being decoded only by cpu, despite checking advanced browser settings many times. Firefox plays VP9 videos with proper hardware acceleration and is not dropping frames at all. What is going on?

No dice, still software only. Upon playing mp4 streams I can see in vivaldi://media-internals GpuVideoDecoder for such stream, but vp9 it's still VpxVideoDecoder.

isn't this supported only from win10?
Also, if you have animations enabled in Vivaldi, YT will drop lots of frames especially on 50/60fps videos. Settings/Appereance/Use Animation, untick.

Firefox plays VP9 videos with proper hardware acceleration

Firefox has its own codecs, maybe they're working better, Vivaldi has to do with royalty free codecs.

This seems to be the case. Did a lot more digging and found out they disabled VPx decoding for everything before Windows 10 creators update. Real shame, because all standalone video players handle hardware vp9 on Win7 just fine...
