[1.15.xxx.xx] Broken embedded videos
-
Ever since first snapshot from 1.15 branch was released, embedded videos have issues but mostly do not work at all. Going back to 1.13 fixes it all and 1.14 is really buggy making it unusable for me.
Extensions are not the culprit nor is the hardware based decoding,
Vivaldi X64 on Windows 10 X64.

Vivaldi version, all 1.15 snapshots that I have tried.
GPU Nvidia GTX 755M, drivers, several different versions from the 39x.x+ branch, newest one, 391.35 currentlyUnfortunately I reverted to 1.13 and won't be going to 1.15 until these are fixed so I can't give You an exact url for videos, but in question are, that I remember, all embedded videos from Neowin.net and various other news outlets that mostly use Youtube.
The issue presents itself in this manner: I can see the embedded video position and, presumably the first frame, but the video itself is neither clickable nor it responding to mouse hover, it behaves like a picture but it can't be right-clicked.

Well, using Vivaldi Snapshot 1.15.1147.21 on Win 10 Pro (with GT 1030 with Nvidia Driver 391.35) this video plays OK for me (nearly half way down page)
https://www.neowin.net/news/unboxing-huaweis-p20-and-the-40-megapixel-p20-proSo unless your card (GTX 755M) has been blacklisted by Chromium, I've no idea what your problem is - sorry.
-
All videos play fine in 1.13 for me with same extensions and overwritten profile, but none in 1.15. Thx for the checkup, though.
Who knows what it is, I am satisfied with 1.13 working. I'll be moving to next version when this issue gets resolved I guess.

Well, there is also the possibility that your extensions are not compatible with latest Chromium (used in Snapshots) as well.

...and that is why I tried it with extensions disabled, but I use only 4 extension, none which should mess with the videos. uBlock origin, Yet another Flags, Imagus and Google Analytics opt-out.

@ubik said in [1.15.xxx.xx] Broken embedded videos:
OK - the only extension that I have from that list is uBlock (1.15.24)
I'll be moving to next version when this issue gets resolved I guess.
The problem with that is there is no way to "resolve" an unknown problem!?
Unless you are willing to install the latest snapshot and do some investigations, any fix will only be accidental. Even if you create a bug, if the devs can't reproduce it what can they do?and 1.14 is really buggy making it unusable for me.
But does 1.14 Stable allow you to play those videos?
Just try a stand-alone install, no extensions or Flag changes -
i have a similar problem using amazon video:
the short commerical clip play and then the player isloading the video and loading and loading.
The same in private mode.vivaldi version 1.15.1147.21 (Offizieller Build) (64-Bit)
Windows 10
NVIDIA GTX 960 -

Try: If it works in Private Window, one of your extensions cause trouble.
Just tried it with the same result. Videos are not working at all.

Just try a stand-alone install, no extensions or Flag changesBoth 1.13 and 1.14 play embedded videos fine, but 1.14 branch is just too buggy and slow I might add compared to 1.13 so I reverted to 1.13. It seems the new/rewritten UI is really slowing Vivaldi down, UX painting especially.
-
@ubik OK, but with regard to video playing:-
1.14 Stable was based on Chromium 64 and the videos worked for you.
1.15 Snapshots are (now) on Chromium 65 - so that may be the cause of your problem! As you have eliminated extensions and profile problems (by testing "clean") that only leaves GPU problems with this Chromium base or maybe some codecs related to the new version!?
-
Unfortunately I can Ill afford to wipe my profile and so it won't happen but it is not GPU as I turned off hardware acceleration to check things out and the result is the same...broken embedded videos in 1.15. Besides why would the profile work in 1.13 and in 1.14 and wouldn't in 1.15?
-
@ubik Chromium is continually changing the underlying engine, and Vivaldi has to regularly adopt the new form of the engine. Be aware that refreshing your profile does not require you to "wipe" your data, sessions, notes, history, etc. It does mean you need to re-install your extensions one at a time, and extensions are often the cause of such problems.

As I have pointed out, extensions are not the culprit since Vivaldi running in private mode without a single extension shows the same inability to play embedded videos.
-
@ubik I was not answering specifically to the case of your extensions. I was answering to the generality of "wipe my profile." You can still refresh your profile and save the old one. If it doesn't help anything, you can just put the old one back. This has the advantage of not making any assumptions or inferences, but simply testing if a clean profile fixes things.

Ok, just started fresh. New profile no extension and it is the same. Embedded videos are a no go.
-
@ubik So weird. All media plays fine here - including embedded video.

Unfortunately sometimes bugs are not universal and that makes them hard to reproduce and fix. Like I said it all points out to Vivaldi or like You suggested to Chromium. Keeping my fingers crossed Thank You for Your time!
-
Reporting that I have found the culprit which is problematic only in 1.15 branch and I'm guessing that it is the change in Chromium 65 that is either buggy or has been modified.
anyway I had this enabled in vivaldi://flags
Strict site isolation
Experimental security mode that ensures each renderer process contains pages from at most one site. In this mode, out-of-process iframes will be used whenever an iframe is cross-site. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android
Turning it off resolved the issue.
-
@ubik Ah! Good to know! Strict Site Isolation is known to cause certain problems with cross-site content in Chromium 65 (its authors list this in known issues), but it had not occurred to me that this specific item would fall victim to that setting. Further, very few people use the setting, so it's not a top-of-mind suspect in media problems - which Vivaldi developers have been working at, hammer and tongs, to resolve. Thank you for reporting this. Chromium authors predict several fixes for known issues in SSI for Chromium 66, but due to a Stable release of Vivaldi on Chromium 65 running so late (thanks to the dozens of things 65 broke in Vivaldi), I'm not sure if we will have a Stable release on 66. It could be that the developers will do as they have sometimes in the past, and skip 66 in favor of making a timely release of Stable based on 67.
