It's great to be excited for a browser again
-
As a web developer and a full on geek it's great to feel excited for the web browser I use once again. And that's because I've switched to Vivaldi as my main browser.
I've used Firefox and a whole bunch of extensions since version 1.0, and I've been dreading more and more the updates Mozilla made to their browser. The writing has been on the wall since Firefox 5.0, really, that they wanted to kill their extension ecosystem, so I've resisted updating my browser, resorted to making my own extensions when I had to, and have actually be running version 35 (!!!) for a long while, simply because updating means doing away with functionality (and let's be honest, if you run NoScript or equivalent, safety is pretty much a non-issue for a normal work environment and a restrict set of websites I visit daily).
But of course now Firefox killed the possibility of installing actual extensions (extensions to the browser's code, that's where they get their name), so who cares, I dropped its sorry zombie butt to the curb and so I just wanted to thank the devs for their amazing hard work and dedication to Vivaldi.
I've been using it for a month now and I'm loving it. The loading speeds could be better, and there's a few quirks I'm still trying to get accustomed to, and of course no real extensions, but the Chrome library is way better than anything else anyway, so despite how barren it (the extension library) is of truly functional features, I still managed to find about a dozen extensions that really improve my browsing experience.
And of course, the features Vivaldi just puts everything else to shame, there's no arguing. Tab stacking (which was in Opera - the real one anyway) is awesome, the new tab management sidebar is great, all the options and customization built in by default, it's a blast and I'm looking forward to the future and eagerly anticipating the new stuff that is gonna be added (imagine that, Mozilla!) to the browser.
Browsing was awesome with a browser that was truly mine because I could extend it so much to feet my every whim. The king is dead now. But I'm glad that's the case

Isn't it just?! Welcome. Some of us have been here a long time, but the enthusiasm levels remain undiminished.
The king is dead now
Given you have come from FF, i'm tempted to assume you had bestowed royalty upon FF, but you also mentioned Opera, hence there's an ambiguity in your quote. To remove the ambiguity, i'll just say this... to many of us here, the king was Opera [Presto], not FF, & V is the rightful heir to the throne, indeed, now its incumbent.

That's not strictly true. It doesn't have a dedicated extension library, add on store, or something of that nature, like the major browsers do, but Vivaldi extensions do exist. Have a look at the modding subforum: https://forum.vivaldi.net/category/52/modifications
Vivaldi Hooks is probably the best example I know of, though it's a bit broken right now.

I meant from an extensibility standpoint

That's awesome, thank you so much!
Also, this morning I noticed, last nice, I had left an empty Vivaldi window open when I closed it and shut down my computer. Which in Firefox would mean I would have lost my session, because closed tabs aren't saved on browser restart.
Well, what do you know! Vivaldi saves closed tabs and windows on browser restart, so all I had to do is open the window manager and poof! Amazingness happens -
I was a long time Opera user and my main thing was tab support and the bookmarks with thumbnails (speeddial). That was my main way of interacting with a browser so when Opera dumped them I lost my method of interacting with the web and had to learn a totally new way.
I was incredibly excited to find Vivaldi and see their brilliant support for things like...speeddial! and Tabs! So Vivalid is my main browser now and it's became fun again interacting with the web in the most natural way there is! -
Heyah !
I'm also using a lot of extensions (23 at the moment), but I was curious, which extensions are you using ? (: -
@goldnoway Here's what I'm using:
- HTTPS Everywhere
- LastPass
- Lazarus: Form Recovery
- Open Link in Same Tab
- Open Selected Links
- Save Image Router
- SessionBox (I still need to figure out if it conflicts with uMatrix)
- Stylish
- TubeBuddy (I'm a creator )
- Type-ahead-find
- uBlock Origin
- uMatrix
Well, that was more than I thought
