All tabs lost after computer restart

  • Despite having the option selected to recover the last session when restarting, whenever the whole operative system restarts (Mac OS upgrade, for example), all tabs that were open in the last session are lost. Really annoying! A simple browser restart doesn't cause this issue, it only happens if I restart the whole computer. Pinned tabs are also lost.

I am using the One Tab extension so in theory I should have a double layer of security, in reality I don't. It works just fine on Chrome.

Overall, I find Vivaldi very good. This is really problematic though, since I don't want this to happen again, I may have important pages open and don't want to lose that information.

MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015. Running on Mac OS Sierra 10.12.3, latest version of Vivaldi, which I also tried to reinstall.

I have blocked third party cookies and using several extensions including:

    One Tab
    Google keep
    ImTranslator: Translator, Dictionary, TTS
    Frame by Frame for YouTube
    Magic Actions for YouTube
    LastPass
    Reopen closed tab Button
    Pocket
    uBlock Origin
    Youtube Playback Speed Control

    Thanks

@lucaben: You have four extensions that potentially intercept or get their fingers into Vivaldi's tab storage function: One Tab; Google Keep; Reopen closed tab Button; Pocket.

Does that mean that there is no known problem on the part of Vivaldi regarding this issue? Or is it a known issue that can happen without any extensions?

Since day one (I started to use Vivaldi when the first public snapshot was made available), Vivaldi has kept losing my tabs from time to time.

Nine times out of 10, I'm able to restore the tabs from the tab trash bin after launching Vivaldi and seeing the empty tabbar. So, this issue isn't very serious to me.

@ryofurue: It has happened to me twice in two years. Once on a computer crash, and once on a browser update. Otherwise, in normal browsing, this is not a trait of the browser. I have four different kinds of Vivaldi on ten different machines, and none of them do it. Ever.

Thanks for your prompt response. The problem happens to me like once or twice a month . . . at least that's my perception. I don't have a solid statistics. :-)

@ryofurue: Of course I am on Windows. Mac is a special case, and tends to give the developers fits. We had to delay an entire release for weeks just for a Mac bug. So I am never surprised to hear things like "my screen flickers," "videos won't play," "I have picture but no sound," "my tabs are all gone," etc. from Mac users. It's a hellishly hard platform to write for - worse even than Linux.

  • Thanks for your replies. I've just submit a bug report. I've also reached out at the guys who developed One Tab since it's the most important extension I use, but didn't get a reply. I guess Vivaldi is still a very niche browser. I hope this can be tested since I can deal with bugs, but loss of data should never happen. I do appreciate all the hard work that you guys are doing!

  • Update: I've recreated the issue again with ALL extensions disabled today, and it still happens. Good news is, I could at least recover the last session from the trash icon.

@lucaben: Word of caution - once installed, some extensions will continue to interfere even when "disabled."

  • Good point!

  • @Ayespy Quoting from another parallel conversation, I thought there's some food for thoughts here, and you guys may want to consider this: "I have to say that after realising that the last session can be retrieved via the recycle bin, I am now confident I can keep using Vivaldi and support it as much as I can. You gave me a good insight, though. I believe a short term solution that could be easily implemented would be at least to let people know that there is a possibility to retrieve the last session (using a "Do you want to retrieve the last session?" overlay, for example). In fact the problem is, one should be aware of the functionality associated to the recycle bin in the first place! ". Thanks

  • @Gwen-Dragon You are right, unfortunately I've posted it under "Vivaldi for Windows" by mistake and people are still reacting to that. This is the right one.

OK, then i close the duplicate.

  • I've got the same problem and I fixed it for me.
Maybe this is some hint what causes this issue in general:

First approach: I though it was an issue with access rights to user specific data, so I checked the rights under C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Vivaldi
There was just write protection, but all users got access. I removed the write protection and it did not helped.

Second approach: I read the post about the Extensions and uninstalled my extensions and it worked. I then reinstalled everything and rebooted the computer after each installation. And the conclusion of this: twitch now caused this issue.

Hope that gives a hint in the right direction.

    System data:
    Vivaldi: 1.7.735.46
    OS: Windows 10 (x64)

    Installed Extensions:

    • AdBlock 3.8.7
    • BetterTTV 6.9

  • For me on Win it is every time.
Didn't repeat few times but it looks something like this.

I was testing how to create Chrome App shortcut and it looks like if you run app with --app argument when Vivaldi is closed, and then open browser, tabs are not restored.

Same thing happens when Hangouts extension is running.
After restart Vivaldi auto starts and running Hangouts as background tab.
Opening Vivaldi, tabs are not restored.
I tried disabling Hangouts extension and restart, tabs were restored.

Could it be that if app or extension run Vivaldi without opening main window last session gets rewritten with empty one?
