Any way to disable the "This type of file can harm your computer" warning?
-
@Abbysssal The chrome://settings/... links access internal Chromium-core pages in Vivaldi whereas the vivaldi://settings/... links access settings popup.
-
@DoctorG Yeah... It's really confusing, since the end addresses look almost the same. Chromium's settings address is effectively invalid, since it redirects to Vivaldi's.
vivaldi://settings/downloads
- Chromium
vivaldi://settings/downloads/
- Vivaldi -
@Abbysssal When i copy&paste these URLs in my 6.5 browser both show Vivaldi settings page.
-
@DoctorG Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
chrome://settings/downloads
redirects tovivaldi://settings/downloads
, but then if you try to go tovivaldi://settings/downloads
, it goes to Vivaldi's settings atvivaldi://settings/downloads/
.Well, either way, Vivaldi's settings are missing the "Ask where to save each file before downloading" toggle. And it's really non-intuitive to access it through Chromium's settings. A normal user wouldn't even think that there are two sets of essentially the same settings.
Is there an active bug report for this issue?

@Abbysssal
Hi, do you mean this in vivaldi://settings/downloads/ ?If I disable it, it is also disabled in chrome://settings/downloads
Cheers, mib
EDIT: It does not redirect it only change the the URL and this is odd. -
@mib3berlin Really? It might be because I'm on the latest stable version (6.4.3160.47), and not the preview/testing one. For me these settings can be changed independently.
-
@Abbysssal
Hm, I am now on my Linux box and cant reproduce it there.
I always test with latest stable, I can't expect anyone to use the snapshot (beta).
I am sorry but I cant test again on Windows at moment but I am sure you are right, maybe I was on the snapshot. -
@mib3berlin I am now on Vivaldi 6.5.3201.4 (Official Build) (64-bit), Windows 11 Version 23H2 (Build 22631.2715). I did some tests.
Settings Chromium's "Ask before downloading" Chromium's "Ask before downloading" Vivaldi's "Save without asking" "Save" prompts Vivaldi's dialog, then a "unsafe file" warning, saved to default location; "Save as" only opens system dialog. "Save" prompts Vivaldi's dialog, then system dialog; "Save as" only opens system dialog. Vivaldi's "Save without asking" Download prompts a "unsafe file" warning, then it's saved to default location. Download only opens system dialog. I've configured mine to
, since that's the behavior I need.
-
To be clear, this is what I mean by Vivaldi's dialog:
The "unsafe file" warning:
And the system dialog (Windows 11):
-
It's a brilliant trick to utilize the two sister settings in the way described today (and I actually prefer seeing the Windows save dialog versus the Vivaldi one), but there's one "problem" I have: I haven't seen this warning in a good while, maybe months. Does anyone know a good test link which triggers it one way but not the other?
-
@rseiler This is the one I used: https://hebaonrotfkaqnyymswi.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/uploads/1?download=RogueLibsCore.dll
For me, it triggers a warning only if Chromium's "Ask before downloading" is off. If it's on, then there's no warning.
-
Thanks, I just figured that out when I noticed the giant screenshot.
The link here also works:
https://github.com/SugarBarrel/RogueLibs/releases/tag/v3.6.9Yes, confirmed. Sometimes it takes really thinking outside the box to solve an ancient problem. Never would have thought to play with these two settings.
And when you DO get the message this new way, as you do right now with the very new pixelflasher.exe here:
https://github.com/badabing2005/PixelFlasher/releases/tag/v6.3.0.0It's not a case where it doesn't happen in Chrome itself too, it does. Most of the time before, this would trigger in Vivaldi but not with the same file in Chrome.
