Unsolved Sync doesn't work
-
@mib2berlin My thanks for taking the time helping to shine light on this issue which had become quite murky for me.
Very disappointed to see the answer could well be the need to use a mobile phone which I have happily been able to negotiate my way round most of my life.
I have spent quite a bit of time over the last week examining other possibilities and so far, I am satisfied with the performance of Ghost browser and Floccus for synching bookmarks (also cross-browser capability) which so far, I have been able to use glitch-free with my desktop set up.
I have no doubt it could be any of the reasons you point to but with the same fundamental desktop setup for the last three years and no faults of the type this Vivaldi sync has thrown up in recent months with any other platform or program, I can only wonder about why Vivaldi is so different. I will try it again in the future from time to time but if my Ghost/Floccus arrangement holds then maybe I am well set already. -
While on desktop sync is working fine, on my Android phone it's still very unstable when WiFi is on. First, it shows 1970 as last sync time, and gives an error a bit later. Everything's ok if I'm constantly on mobile data.

@pfh3737
The mobile hotspot is only for testing if sync work without using your network, so something is blocking Vivaldi sync.
Floccus is a Chromium extension, it may work with Vivaldi too.
Maybe the Chromium version of Vivaldi change something, it is at 134 now, Chrome is on 133, on which is Ghost?
We got reports about sync issues since it was implemented, it was always network restrictions or even the Internet Service Provider blocks Vivaldi sync servers.
I am sorry you cant use sync, it's an essential feature for me too.Cheers, mib

@natetop
Hi, I can only guessing, any security software on your mobile? -
@mib2berlin nothing. No firewall, no antivirus. Only Play Protect, but it should just be scanning installed apps, nothing to do with traffic, shouldn't it?
-
@mib2berlin oh wait, also built-in virus scanner based on McAfee signature as far as I see. Yeah that's all.
-
@natetop
Hm, Play Protect not, we all have it but not sure about McAfee.
Can you disable it for a test?
I will try to find the thread users report Anti Virus software interact/block Vivaldi.Cheers, mib
EDIT: Sorry, no way to find the post, the search term "security" gives 13 pages, I cant remember which security software it was. -
@mib2berlin well, I did, but nothing changed. As I said, first 1970, then error.
-
@natetop
I am sorry but I have no further ideas.- Jan 1970 is the start point of the Unix time counter, I remember I saw it here in the forum, not sure if it was a sync issue.
-
@mib2berlin might consider looking for another browser then..again. Thanks anyway!
-
@natetop same problem... but using USA VPN it works..
-
Such blockades can be causes by filters of Internet Access Provider.
-
@DoctorG earlier it used to work flawlessly..
-
Vivaldi Sync server does not block users by geo location or something else.
Blockades must be in local network or internet access point/provider.I can not say more.

Many thanks for your extended input and apologies for not reverting on this earlier - even though bookmarks are very important, occasionally other life issues take precedence!
You have unravelled the mystery but unfortunately there is nothing can be done about the solution although given a little time maybe things will change.
Your point about my wifi signal was entirely correct. When I borrowed a smart phone (yep until now did not even know what a "hotspot" was) the connection to Vivaldi sync was flawless. As the signal comes from a reputable provider (Zen) (admittedly through OpenReach) with very fast speeds and high reliability I never suspected. Unfortunately, I can do nothing because it is the company set-up relaying signals to a wider Park audience. I believe they are about to move the modem and all its connected gubbins in the near future and perhaps that will reset things. Still a little odd that I do not experience other connection problems and I use this wifi signal continuously and with a lot of variable platforms. Having said that I would not expect Vivialdi to be spending time and effort to examine a problem that seems to affect so few. Thanks again though. -
