Vivaldi 7.2: Speedy and smart, a serious update.

@mib2berlin If it's a Vivaldi change, can't you choose which version to remove it in? If it's not ready for 7.2, then push the removal back from 7.3 to 7.4. And I say that as someone who hasn't complained about it (though I'm not really happy about it either; a bookmark I used to be able to access by typing "ny" now requires me to type either the whole URL or navigate to it by mouse, just like on the Android version).

@vdeane
Hi, the old address bar was much better for me too.
I am not a Vivaldi team member, they decide if something is added or removed.
They have 8 weeks now to add missing features back and/or take users critics and requests to make the new address bar as feature rich as before, at least.
Some users report the new one is blasting fast and they love it.
For example I use Quick commands to search for history and bookmarks, I don't need this in the address bar, disabled.Cheers, mib

I'm neutral about the new omnibox - I guess I don't rely too much on urlbar - but the fact the experiment wasn't dropped yet (I think was planned to be already removed on 7.2) means they are aware the new one need some refinements. So there is hope but...if no-one use the new, it won't improve. -
@mib2berlin
It makes perfect sense if it is not ready. And since a major feature, the ability to organize the results in the dropdown is missing, we can say it's not ready.Users have to get used to it or change browser.
That's BS. For one, you can't expect people to jump from one software to the other all the time just because the developers break their work flow. Not even if the software is free. For two, Vivaldi has been advertising itself to be highly customizable, and we just lost a huge part of the customization of the address bar.

So there is hope but...if no-one use the new, it won't improve.The fact that the new one requires you to not clear your history so that it can calculate what you access the most is very problematic. Especially for a browser that positions itself as privacy focused. I clean my history daily so the results are always going to be poor since the rankings will always get reset. That's just a bad idea

@mib2berlin
It is indeed faster. I have a mid-highend PC and still I can feel it.But we are not complaining to bring back the old algorithm. I am quite sure that it wouldn't be noticably slower if they would do an additional final sorting into categories. Or if it would be noticably slower, many of us would still choose that option as a price to pay. Options, customization, choice, that's why we love this browser.
-
@sjudenim That would explain why might be poor in some scenarios.
A fallback mechanism when ranking history is not enough (session/daily) and some sorting would probably help.
-
@sjudenim
Not to mention that they posted a lot recently against the AI expansion, yet now they ask us to teach an algorithm. Yes, I know it's not exactly the same, but still... -
@jon This update is impressive. For the first time Vivaldi is faster than Brave on Android. I ran multiple times Speedometer 3 on both Galaxy S22 Ultra and Xiaomi Pad 6 and had consistently Vivaldi ahead by over 15 percent. On Windows 11 they are more or less equal. Well done!

It's been a few days since the update, and as I still have problems that started right after the update I guess I'll write about it here.
When I start Vivaldi it takes forever, the process shows in Task Manager, but it can take even a few minutes until the window appears. Vivaldi is also using around 7-8% CPU during the entire time between me clicking on the Vivaldi icon and the window actually appearing.
I'm also still having and old issue, when after starting Vivaldi for the first time after turning on the PC, Vivaldi window shows only home page, and I need to close the window and start Vivaldi again for all my tabs and workspaces to show. So basically every day in the morning I open Vivaldi, close it, and open again. I got used to this, but now every start takes minutes, and closing also takes more than 30 second up to a few minutes (when I press the X it stops responding for some time, and then closes after a while). Basically two starts and one close take forever, and this is every day.
From other issues, it also stops responding for aroud 20-40 seconds every time I want to move a tab or select a few tabs and right click on them. -

Drop-down menu prioritize was great! It is gone now.
Please bring it back. As an option, or so. -

Hope so! drop-down menu prioritize was great! It is gone now.To clarify, I was specifically referring to a way to disable showing past searches

Can confirm the browser's UI became much slower, often several seconds freeze on any UI operation β not only with the browser itself, but also when interacting with web pages. It's like it's indeed single-threaded or something.
Don't know how to tell you how to reproduce. I have several windows, a bunch of workspaces and a ton of tabs (all hibernated at the browser start, but they're there; their mere existence causes right click on the tab bar hang for several seconds before the context menu appears β but that problem was there for forever, just mentioning here as an example of how many tabs even hibernated can hurt performance).
I've also only now noticed in Task Manager that each website in the Panel in each window spawns a separate instance. So maybe this is something. I've now removed those websites from the Panel that I rarely use; but it's annoying that I have to care about it. -
Great news! Thanks!
-
Wow, this is funny.
After many days of being annoyed by the yellow "sync problem" status, I just pressed the "sync all data" button and everything is now fine.
Great user experience!

The changes on the address bar seems to remove the priority selector of the suggestions. In the new version it's impossible to navigate to a domain if there is an entry on the history.
For example, if you have some URLs of products of amazon and you write in the address bar "amazon.com" you only have the option to search on the web or select one of the URLs of the history, it's impossible to navigate to "amazon.com" to show the home page.
-
Has anyone else found the fullscreen reminder option has disappeared?
Also, I've found ever since doing a fresh Windows install recently, I have no longer had the update button next to my extensions, it's back in the icons section on taskbar like way back when.
-
@Ninjaraccoon Yes, it was removed. I do not know why.
