Youtube | Block Ads with Native Ad Blocker
-
@sdrocker, right now YT is continually changing the anti-adblock tactics it uses, which is why it is difficult to achieve stable blocking. For this reason, at the moment I use the Embed Redirect script, which redirects YT videos embedded, if I click on a video link or reload the video when this adblock warning sign appears. This permits to watch it without ads in full tab page.
It's a small script with few lines, you can use it with an Userscript Manager, eg Tampermonkey, Violentmonkey or othr from the store, or download the script in a folder of your choice, don't delete it, and drag the script to the extension page of Vivaldi with the Developer mode on, to install it direct as extension.
-
I found a manual work-around. Viewing YT with 'Block Trackers' ONLY. Ad starts to play, I click the (next video) button below, then the back browser button, the ad is skipped and the video plays as normal. Kind of a pain but it works without having to watch multiple minute ads!
-
@sdrocker, same as with the script, you also can simply edit the Video URL with the same result. So you don't need to desactivate the adblocker (which also skips the ads).
Instead of
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxxxxx
edit it to
https://www.youtube.com/embed/xxxxxxxx
Using the script is only more confortable, but it doesn't do other thing than this.
Alternatively you can search the video with Andisearch and watch it there sandboxed in the search results.

Thanks for the Andi rec. That could come in handy. Hopefully they will add a dark mode soon!
-
@sdrocker, I use the Dark Mode settings in Vivaldi, it works even in the Chrome Store, which no extension can do and also in the intern pages and menus in Vivaldi. But yes, theme settings in Andi will be great, but the devs (Angie and Jed) already have it in their timeline)

@Catweazle A podcast I follow recently did a deep dive on UBO vs. Manifest v3 and between its show notes (linked below) and some research I did afterwards, I figured out why I can't recreate how good UBO is with filter lists (be it YouTube or elsewhere): UBO doesn't just use filter lists, it also proactively injects JavaScript into pages in order to get around adblock blockers and paywalls, as well as make it less likely for filter lists to break sites.
-
@vdeane, this is why it is possible to emulate uBO (at least in part) using the Vivaldi Blocker + userscript as complement.
With the new Mv3 it's IMHO always a better solution as using the descaffeinate uBO light extension from the Chrome Store. -
Youtube injects now in the video itself some 3 sec ads.
Blockers can not always win against the odds an ads. -
@DoctorG, embed redirect can, this avoid any ad, but it fails in some videos which has desactivated the possibility to watch it outsite from YT, luckily there are only a few.
-
I tested in Chrome this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9tDnI8W8eY
Without ad blocker:
H&M ad:
With uBOL:
No ad:
With Adguard Blocker (now MV3):
No ad:
Conclusion:
Both MV3 blockers are perfectly capable of avoiding ads in YT, at least with this video and in my country.
PS: The video is from Spain.

Could you post a link to a video where that happens?

I do not remember, that was a few days ago with some videos. Could have been a YT experiment.

From Adguard blog:
"Pause ads on YouTube: A new annoyance in your streaming routine
October 10, 2024
3 min readAs if YouTube wasn't already packed with distractions — bumper ads, non-skippable in-stream ads, and overlay ads are just some of them — the Google-owned platform has now started rolling out pause ads to users worldwide, it seems.
Pause ads: what are they like?
A pause ad is a static banner that appears on your screen when you pause a YouTube video. Instead of covering the entire screen, it pops up on the right side. Below the ad, you'll find a dismiss button and an information button, indicating that you can close it if you want.YouTube has confirmed to The Verge that this new type of ad is now available to all advertisers, which likely means more users will soon be experiencing them. The YouTube spokesperson told the publication they’ve seen “both strong advertiser and viewer response” to the new ads. And while we’ll leave that “strong viewer response” up to interpretation — they may be effective but for one we don’t believe users are thrilled about it — it sounds like these ads are here to stay.
The introduction of this new format has already sparked a fierce backlash among users. The YouTube subreddit has become a place for people to vent their frustrations and many were not holding back
It’s easy to understand the overall dismay at YouTube’s seemingly insatiable need to fill every nook and cranny with money-making ads.
Last year alone, YouTube brought ads to Shorts, and 30-second unskippable ads to TV.
In fact, YouTube pause ads are not something entirely new. And although it appears that they are now being rolled out to all platforms (mobile, desktop, and YouTube TV), they have been long in the making. Back in April 2024, YouTube announced that it had been testing unskippable pause ads on TV. At the time, the company said it was pleased with how well the pause ads were performing, noting they helped increase brand awareness and encouraged advertisers to spend more.
Pause ads are increasingly commonplace
Pause ads aren't a revolutionary format; rather, YouTube is jumping on a trend that's become increasingly popular across the streaming landscape. Pause ads for Procter & Gamble, Kit Kat and other companies that are unrelated to the movie industry have become a familiar sight on Hulu, Peacock and Discovery’s Max. Earlier this year, Amazon upped the ante by announcing that such pause ads on Prime Video would become shoppable, meaning you could add an item to your cart right from the screen. Roku went even further by patenting a technology that brings its own ads to pause screens, even when you're using external devices connected via HDMI, like game consoles or other streaming adapters.Blocking YouTube pause ads
At AdGuard, we haven't encountered pause ads firsthand yet, but based on what we’ve seen on social media, it seems that these ads are similar to the ones we’ve successfully blocked in the past and won’t require the invention of any new ad blocking methods. We’re committed to keeping an eye on this situation and will provide updates as we delve deeper into the specifics of how these ads function and how users can potentially block them. Stay tuned for more information!" -
Hi how set up ad bloker on vivaldi against youTube?

uBlock Origin (uBO) extension does a very good job blocking youtube.
Edit: I corrected the url to point to uBlock Origin. I had accidentally linked uBlock.

I'm not sure if I changed something on my Vivaldi settings, but I don't seem able to stop a lot of the YOUTUBE ads when I play videos.
This does not seem to be an issue with the Brave browser, at least not yet.
If there is something to do and skip all or most of the ads in YOUTUBE using Vivaldi, please share. Otherwise Brave, here I come.
Thanks.
