Youtube | Block Ads with Native Ad Blocker
-
Over the weekend, YouTube started nagging me to allow ads again.
I cleared my YouTube cookies, logged out of YouTube, and restarted Vivaldi, but it made no difference.
Today, I can again use YouTube without ads, and with the default ad-blocking enabled, without any scripts or extensions. It seems to work for a week or two until the warning appear again.
-
@Pesala, still no issues with the script I use
-
Last weekend, YouTube ads were back again.
Because using third-party extensions we don't have ads, now when using the Vivaldi standard, YouTube always manages to win with ads?
Vivaldi's ad blocker is broken, it works for a week and then YouTube does something and manages to win. Vivaldi, why is that? -
@carlinhosnewstyle, the same thing happens to those who use uBO, YT is a continuous battle with adblockers and gorhill working overtime to cancel them. This is why I prefer to use methods that YT, at least until now, has not discovered, like this script that I use with Violentmonkey, which has been working for me for half a year without problems, I have not seen ads since then.

@TravellinBob said in Annoying ads on youtube are back:
I've seen uBlockOrigins in tandem with the Vivaldi ad-blocker mentioned as a solution
It can't be stressed enough but let's repeat: DON'T use uBO and another blocker at the same time. They can interfere when you need to block ads on YT. Enable only uBO.

The issue reported in Ad-blocker not Blocking YouTube Ads is a new issue.
YouTube have obviously refined their code to play ads regardless, instead of just showing a screen about violation of the Terms of Service.
I have Ad-blocking enabled, and can now watch videos with it enabled, but ads still show up. My workaround is to use a Command Chain for: History Back, Delay 100, History Forward. That only bypasses the initial ads.

@Pesala, yes, the adblock scripts also don't work anymore since today, but I still watch YT ids without ads redirecting these in embedded form in a new tab in full page
https://openuserjs.org/scripts/Kraust/Youtube_Embed_Redirect/source (very small script of 4 lines).Anyway the ad skipper also still works, because instead blocking it skips them

Finally happened to me today.

Me too

Okay so let me understand this, is Ublock still useful vs. youtube? And what about Privacy Badger?
I've checked around the forum, and those seem to be the most highly recommended solutions, though the recommendations all seem to be 2+ months old. Now re UBlock, I see where someone on Reddit said that youtube was sniffing it out, but then someone else said they're playing wack a mole, so it'll work and then it won't. And I've heard less about Privacy Badger, so how useful is it (still)?

Ublock
Just made a Test.
I don't see Youtube Ads with uBlockExported the uBlock List
Imported to a Testing Profile
Showed up PreVideo Ads
Cleaned the Youtube cookies
Refreshed0 PreVideo Ads
0 InVideo AdsSo,
Clean the Cookies seems necessary as well as take care of the Lists. -
Thank you, and yeah, even if Ublock only ever works part of the time, that's something.

@clifffraser I didn't understand your comparison with Firefox since Firefox doesn't have a native adblock, just an anti-tracker feature. Anyway, that being said, Vivaldi's Adblock, despite blocking a lot of things, is very weak against adblock detection features. On my Vivaldi I use adguard and only leave Vivaldi's anti-tracker on and I'm using YouTube without any problems. You can also use the powerful Ublock Origin, but keep in mind that after the arrival of MV3 (Manifest v3) it may not be as powerful anymore. Anyway, use adguard or ublock origin and clear the cache before testing YouTube with them. I hope that in the future Vivaldi will support extensions in its mobile version so that I can use a more powerful adblock like Adguard (which I already use) or Ublock Origin itself.

care of the Lists
Where to look for “update all used blocklists”? On
vivaldi://settings/privacy/
I don't see. -
AFAIK,
They update independently. But they would be outdated or deprecated.
Current AdBlocker is very basic and on Mobile very inconvenient to manage.Hopefully, this will change soon.

@barbudo2005: thank you for that, but I ran into an issue when I went to download UBlock. Every time I try to install it, I'm redirected to a page to add it to Chrome, and I don't see Vivaldi listed as a browser that supports it. So I don't know whether it's even possible for me to use it without having to change browsers.
-
@CStallone always download extensions from the chrome store:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm -
@Hadden89: okay, but how will adding it to Chrome enable it to work on Vivaldi?
-
@CStallone In the chrome store there is a blue add button on top right. If you don't see it, please check this setting is enabled, restart vivaldi and retry:
