Delete or remove forum account while keeping the Vivaldi email.🤔
-
@Pinkisjustnumbers Ah, thanks.
I would guess that the recent accidental opening of the forum probably didn't create the forum account; it was most likely always there. The
Joined
section on the forum profile page would tell you when it was created.Not sure if that information would make you feel better or worse about the situation
-
@SilentWatcher am uncertain really, the more I think of it, the more I am confused

@Ayespy said in Delete or remove forum account while keeping the Vivaldi email.
:
Unfortunately, they had no control over your username, which you have been sharing with all your webmail contacts (unless you changed your display name).
Well of course, it is the primary reason of a webmail
Contacts are curated and relevant to email usage.
Just i did not want it to appear on the public forum, did not want a forum account to be created
My name appears nowhere on the public internet, and would wish to keep it like this
🥺

@Pinkisjustnumbers Some statistics: There are about 135,960 community members who have never posted to the Forums. Never once. Their comments total is 0. The earliest of these joined in November 2013, ten and a half years ago. Among them are literally hundreds whose username is firstnamelastname, firstname.lastname, firstname-lastname or firstname_lastname. There are another large number who have only made a single comment to the forums. It's going on 170,000 who've made 0 or 1 comment, again, many hundreds of whom chose firstnamelastname or a derivative thereof as their user name. That someone could dig your original profile out of those beggars belief. If you were to PM me your original profile nick, I could tell you what your exposure is.
-
@Pinkisjustnumbers So I went to a page of users that joined in feb/mar 2019. 30 users on that page. 6 of them have their first and last names in their username. I know as much about them now as I did before I started looking at this issue.
-
@Ayespy I am very uncomfortable having it in a public forum
I have my reasons, I do not believe I should have to justify myself on this
When I searched it up, I can see it, with the picture
Also a side note, the profile picture on this current account am using (@Pinkisjustnumbers) is not updatingBut it is late here, I am going to Dreamland
-
@Ayespy will not tell you the exact time for this reason

@Pinkisjustnumbers Your call.

@Ayespy I was under the impression that they didn't mind the user name, they said their REAL name was appearing (even though it's obviously not either here or on their profile) so that leads me to believe they just set their "Display Name" (in Webmail settings) to their real name and can, in fact, change that.
-
@Ayespy Now I see. I just don't remember ever even being asked for my real name at all when creating this account. In fact the only place I have had to put a name, is the "Display Name" of emails. Maybe it should be more clear to new users that in creating a user name for an account, they are creating a single unified account across multiple services and should carefully consider that, especially when choosing a name. I, for instance, had no idea I was getting a Mastodon account; had I known I might have used a different user name. Don't get me wrong, it IS clearly stated what you are signing up for, but you know most people don't read more than the first few sentences. Maybe multiple warnings and verification at sign-up would help, who knows? I do recall when setting up the Webmail account, it warned that "This box will only appear once at account creation." In today's world you need plenty of checks and balances against short attention spans.
-
@fallaw You are never asked for your real name. But in setting up webmail, there is a line for your first name, and a line for your last name. You can put anything in those lines but once you do, you can't change it. That does not affect the nick you have chosen for your profile, which in this user's case included their first and last name.
Edit: (That said, everyone at Vivaldi knows exactly whom I am in RL and some even know where I live. I've met nearly half of them in person, broken bread with them, and spent hours conversing with them. I had to give them my personal details to be accepted as a Moderator and Soprano (tester). My name has even appeared in articles here on this site. But that didn't come from my profile.
)

The whole point of the vivaldi community is that it is integrated.
-
@Ayespy I still maintain that I was never asked for a first or last name when setting up Webmail (just yesterday), there weren't even any fields for that, just a "Display Name" lol. The only personal info I ever had to provide, was an alternate email address. Must have changed since yours was created. My user name is my real Family name but I wanted that; I have an email from a certain Swiss research facility that I use for anonymity. Maybe it should be possible to have a forum "display name" that can override the user's profile name? Like how one can change their Twitter handle.
-
@fallaw here's how it worked for me: I use an Android tablet. I downloaded the Vivaldi browser app from the Google Play Store and opened it and set up an account. At Vivaldi account creation, the ONLY thing I was asked, was the desired User Name, and an email address at which they could send a verification link. After tooling around the forums and settings and getting used to the browser, I noticed that I had a Webmail link on the main page and clicked that and was given the sign up form. Nowhere on that form was I ever asked for a First Name or Last Name. I wish now I had taken a screenshot, because the fields were, from top to bottom, Display Name, User Name (greyed out since, well, you can't change it) and a Submit button. LOL I don't know how you or OP were asked for a real name. OR maybe I'm misremembering, and if they did ask, I just left those fields blank? Is that allowed? Now I'm wondering why my experience seems to be completely different??
-
@fallaw Well, it was nine years ago, and I may be misremembering. I did have blanks to fill in for first and last name, but it may have been just to create a community profile (which I did not have to do again to use webmail, perhaps) but the community software and I think even the webmail client have changed since then. If I were go to edit my profile today, it still has my first "name" in it.
-
I did not think it would be a publicly linked account, I thought the forum was separated and would require confirmation
So for better identification (often share a computer with bestie and his wife
) I used my real name. It said it is encrypted so I thought privacy as well.
But now I think this system will not change, and will not be able to remove the forum account, and now the mastodon thingy that I hope is not connected
I was coming from Firefox, where the browser account was not public
-
@Ayespy is this!
-
@Pinkisjustnumbers mastodon is like the forum. If you didn't used your "real" vivaldi account to login there is not linked. Even if I think you can remove it from there.
-
@Hadden89 I do not even want to look now 🫣
