In the wait for auto-update, why not makingi PPA (repositories) for Linux?
-
I'm tired of checking the website for a new update and we doesn't have auto-update yet(that's :().So in the meanwhile, if you are not going to release auto-update soon (Vivaldi 2.0 maybe?) then please just add PPAs (repos) for Linux users. In my opinion, most of Linux users are in two groups; and one of the two is devs and students using Vivaldi, who might not have the time to go to the website to check, but they usually do
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
for quick updating. So if the Vivaldi Team isn't going to add auto-update soon, why don't just add PPAs (repos) for Linux users?

Hi,

It's possible to set up a Cron job according to your needs.
-
Please check your repos in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ .
Vivaldi add a repo while you install vivaldi the first time -
My Debian-based system updates on a schedule. Since I installed Vivaldi it added the repo and if there's a Vivaldi update, it catches it. Of course I manually order system updates more frequently than the machine would on its own anyway, and again, it always catches any Vivaldi updates.

apt and dnf have both synchronized with the vivaldi repositories for me. i suppose i haven't tried the 32-bit versions, though. dnf currently lets me have stable and snapshot variants available. couple updates ago they even have different icons for each. very useful, since im getting [https://vivaldi.net/en-US/forum/extensions/14910-selinux-denial-warning] selinux-denial-warning with last two stable versions. what are your machine, ppa, and network setups?

That's strange. I do, like several others who mentioned it in their posts as well. My first installation of Vivaldi (I suppose it was 1.0) added the repository http://repo.vivaldi.com/stable/deb/ to sources and thus Vivaldi's updates work just like everything else on my system.
But there is no package vivaldi-keyring. Shouldn't there be one like for all the other repositories? -
Hi guys,
This is a discussion we would like to conclude if possible. Should we do it the way Google does it by adding a repo when you install Vivaldi from an installer package or should we have our own PPA? Having both may cause problems on *buntus and deb based distros. Currently we are adding a repo when you install. On Arch we are featured in AUR which seems to work well, but it's very important that we find the best way to do it on Ubuntu. Thoughts?

I think the current way of adding a repo makes much more sense. It works for *buntus and all other Debian-based distros, because it is the common way on Debian based systems. ppa is something special to Canonical's World.
But it would be nice to be informed about this. I was surprised that my sources list suddenly contained an additional entry. But what about the keyring package? It seems that there is currently no verification/signing of the package.

i strongly favor the procedure above.

I'm ok with the way it currently works. Adding a repo during install is a convenient way and it also works for other distributions, not just Ubuntu.
