Youtube trialling new ad-blocking

@Sodik, take also an look here https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/702118

@TravellinBob @DoctorG It seems that YouTube has been gradually rolling this out to certain portions of users. Think I first heard about this starting to happen a month or two ago.
Probably only a matter of time until it affects everyone.

@markbara said in on Vivaldi youtube is unusable:
After disabling the build-in Vivaldi ad & tracker blocker and installing the uBlock Origin extension every youtube video throws the "Ad blockers violate YouTube's Terms of Service" error. Yet on MS Edge with uBlock Origin enabled the youtube works fine.
This makes the Vivaldi browser useless. Has anyone encountered this problem before?
Vivaldi is a Chromium-based browser. This has been something we knew was coming for months, that Chromium was removing functionality for adblockers. The hope was that Vivaldi was working on their built-in one so that it could both continue working and do the job of extensions like uBlock. Edge works fine because it's not a Chromium browser.

Edge is based on Blink engine, just like Vivaldi.
As for me, I'm not seeing the Ad blocker message on Vivaldi with uBlock Origin enabled. -
@somnomania, nothing to do with Chromium, YT simply block adblockers, same issue with Vivaldi adblocker or with other using uBO, even front-ends, like Piped, CloudTube and others can't reproduce most YT videos since some weeks. FreeTube, a desktop client also don't work. watch videos in Andisearch only works for some videos. Until now, only the SMPlayer on Desktop still works as it should.
Google since time hate adblockers and now imposes a fairly aggressive policy of disabling them on YT, to promote YT Premium. Either you pay, or it hammers you with ads.
Time to look for alternatives

PLS try to help us ! YT is very useful to me and they are blocking me because i have Vivaldi blockers.
I cannot watch commercials all day long meaning i cannot deactivate the blockers, is an update going to help us ? -
You can try ad-blocker-plus, even-though it says plus it is free

@TARININATHAGHORIDURGADEVI Create a Command Chain in Settings, Quick Commands.
- History Back
- Delay 10 milliseconds
- History Forward
- Assign a Mouse Gesture to the Command Chain, e.g. GestureLeft, GestureRight
- Open the video
- When the ad starts playing, execute the gesture.
I submitted a bug report for this on 6th October 2023. I don't know if Vivaldi can fix this issue, but the Command Chain works well enough for me.
(VB-100544) YouTube Ads No Longer Blocked

@jeremyyellow, until now it seems to work. Let's see how long it takes Google to realize this.

@smb11 or Moderators, please change the title of this thread as it leads to misconceptions for new Vivaldi users.
-
Indeed, I was surprised because ABP is still running on YT.
I believe that ABP works in those countries where the threat of YT has not yet arrived, as ABP is clearly less powerful than uBO.

We have a lot of different threads about this in different places, so I have merged them together. Please discuss the changes / tips to avoid to youtube's ad blocking policy here.

For the record, few minutes ago I also had the warning on YT. I disabled in the site settings "intrusive ads" (from blocked to allowed, to disable internal adblocker) then also refreshed uBO lists (Purge all caches, then Update) and now no more warning or ads in YT.
-
For what it's worth, I got the Youtube warning - then just reloaded the tab. Video played!!

Alternatives would be lovely, but I highly doubt most of the channels I watch on YT are also there. Newer sites seem like a good fit for people who just want random content to watch, not big names who have years of content uploaded. At least I don't have the issue with YT yet.

Do you use RSS feeds for those channels?
It would be good to know if those who see ads also see them through feeds? (in Vivaldi feeds or Feedbro, for example)

I don't, no. I go through phases of actually watching new content, and I tend to just stick with one channel for several days while I catch up.

I recommend you the extension Feedbro to see channels or playlists of YT:

@somnomania, you can import these with the IMDB extension to Odysee
