E.U. Regulations and Rooting your mobile
-
For my European friends, you probably already know this, but I came across this rather interesting article from the Free Software Foundation Europe with regards to “rooting” your mobile and its warrantee.
There are further references within the article which you may also want to explore.
Don’t think it’s the same here in Canada. Will have look into it (although I do not have a mobile, even yet one with a warrantee). -
@greybeard I didn't know this, and have always assumed rooting would void the warranty. But of course, the warranty is on the hardware, not the software that runs on it.
But good news
I've never really considered rooting my device - I need it for work and I need the ability to install apps without faffing around too much with dodgy APK download sites and having to SSH into a bloody phone to fix stuff that breaks. I already do that at work... I just need it to do what it's supposed to and no more. Cool for those who can though.

@greybeard Good news bud, thanks for the sharing.

Ha!
I mean... there are Google Play apps that work better with a rooted device, or that actually need the phone to be rooted for them to fully work. Or maybe you just want to get rid of the bloatware that comes installed with your phone.
Definitely a nice thing for those who can/want to do it!

And you don't have to root the phone to install APKs either. Before Vivaldi's testing program got into the Play Store I was manually installing test builds on my tablet. Now work phones your administrator might have blocked that option, but otherwise it's just a toggle in Settings. (Of course, some specific APKs may need root access. That's different.)

@sgunhouse Yes. I have to use the download kindly offered by Vivaldi to update my Kindle Fire tablet. The gooffle store does not recognize the device (or it does recognize the device as competition) and will not permit an install.
