Event reminder added during copy/paste?
-
I recently decided to try using Vivaldi and Google calendar to log my wife's shift patterm instead of relying on my phone. The phone software seems to have no way to copy/paste which meant creating a new event by hand for every single day.
I thought Vivaldi might be able to help me out since both Vivaldi and my phone can be synchronised with a Google calendar. So I filled out the details for a couple of working days then copy/pasted those examples to populate the rest of this year. It works, but...
... now my phone bleeps in the middle of the night or when I'm on my way back home after dropping my wife off. I also get reminder pop-ups whenever I open Vivaldi and she's been working.
It seems that even though I create the original shift slot without an event notification, all the copied versions have a reminder set at the start of the shift. This could be caused by Vivaldi, Google or my phone - so I don't know who to blame. I have tried creating the event again on the Google page then copy/pasting in Vivaldi but it still happened. I will now try doing all the copy/pasting on the Google webpage instead... (it will be disappointing if this works when Vivaldi doesn't!)
Does anyone else have a similar experience?

So I couldn't see an easy way to copy/paste events in the Google webpage like you can in Vivaldi... did some more testing but it still adds the reminder. Seems I just have to live with it.

Hi, I am not sure I understand all but it seems you can disable notifications in the Google calendar.I am not sure what happen if you enable it in the Vivaldi calendar for a event, for example.
I don´t use the Google calendar for some time but I have it added to my Vivaldi calendar.
If I set a event in the G. calendar it appear in Vivaldi but if I set a event in the Vivaldi calendar it does not appear in the G. calendar.
So I set up a G. event and get a notification in the Vivaldi calendar.
If I disable notifications in Vivaldi I don´t get a G. notification.I guess you have to play a bit which calendar trigger the notification where.
Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin I'm talking about how reminders are being added to the pasted events - which then causes the notifications on my phone and later Vivaldi sessions. I'm not talking about turning notifications on or off in settings.
Here's an original entry in Vivaldi:
I selected this entry and copied it (CTRL-C) in the calendar view. Then I moved the cursor to the next day and pasted the entry (CTRL-V). Selecting the pasted entry in Vivaldi shows it does not yet have a reminder added:
But if I check in the Google calendar webpage it shows this for the original and the copy:
The copy has a reminder added when the original doesn't have one. My phone also has the notification reminder added on the 17th but not the 16th. I think the entry for the 16th was edited on the Google calendar page to have no reminder, then I copied and pasted it in Vivaldi. That means only the entry for the 17th was updated from Vivaldi to Google.
On a different machine, Vivaldi will download the version from Google with the added reminders. Transfer of events between machines (same for my phone) can take a long time and is quite difficult to trigger. I suspect it's the same for you when you say you add events in Vivaldi but they don't appear on Google.
In any case it looks like Google or Vivaldi is adding a reminder when the events are being sent from Vivaldi to Google - although I did wonder if my phone was doing it... it's all very confusing.

@mossman
Independent of the wrong time, if I create a event in Vivaldi, copy it, they appear on the Google calendar with reminders on the original and the copy but 30 Minutes before the event.
But I have notifications completely disabled in the web client of the Google calendar. ??
On a different system the Google calendar in Vivaldi shows the events with reminders.
I test this with the snapshot Vivaldi 6.2.3102.3 and there was a lot of copy past bugs solved for the calendar, so the problem are the reminder.
I am not sure if this is a Vivaldi bug, Google use there own standards but it should work for the user.I hope another user or one from the mail/calendar can step by here.
I will check the bug tracker, maybe there is a report for this reminder issue.Cheers, mib
EDIT: I found a report: VB-94660 Calendar time reminders
and leave a note for the developer with a link to this thread. -
@mib2berlin @mossman There have been reports of and I have myself seen reminders being added to events in google before but not been able (not really put in much of an effort) to pinpoint exactly how it happens.
I'll have a look and see if there is something I can do.

I tested this and for me this is controlled by a setting on Google calendar.
The setting that is screenshot earlier in the thread is only about how the web client handles showing event reminders, not whether the events actually get a reminder. The setting for adding reminders to the events is per calendar.
What I needed to do stop this behaviour was to go into the settings for my calendar and remove the set "On event time" reminder.
@mossman could you check if you have an Event notification set for the calendar that you are syncing. It seems that this is the most likely explanation for your issue. I do believe that how default notifications are handled in google calendar has changed recent-ish-ly.

@eggert
Hi, this work for me, a second instance of Vivaldi synced with Google doesn ´t get a reminder, too.Cheers, mib

Okay - I went to look through the settings, noticed 0hrs reminder as default - which I deleted - and that seems to have fixed it!
I uncoupled and recoupled my phone from Google and everything on that is now set to no reminder.
So it's an odd behaviour(*) from Google itself - based on settings I've never actually seen before (the time zone was also set to the country where I activated my first Android phone back in 2010).
(*) bizarre that the default overrides whatever is sent from the synchronising device! Hopefully it won't now remove reminders if I want them in future...
-
I'm not sure how but it might be a good idea to prompt users of Google calendars about this when they set up in Vivaldi...
-
Great that your issue is fixed. I agree this is quite odd behaviour to add a reminder to incoming event over CalDAV.
But then Google doesn't seem to care to much about their CalDAV implementation, supposedly to push users to use their own apps on their proprietary unpublished API.

@eggert
Maybe a hint for user reminders are managed on the server side for Google calendars?

@mib2berlin Good idea. A note has been added. Probably will trip up some native English speakers, but it might help users experiencing this.
-
@eggert
Thank you, for me as non native English, I understand the note and would check the settings on the Google side.Cheers, mib

Unfortunately, I'm disappointed to report that my phone started bleeping again and I had to dismiss notifications again on one of my Vivaldi profiles (hasn't yet started on others). Google website still shows no reminders, so not sure why. Maybe I have to delete all, make sure all places I've installed Vivaldi show no events, and only then recreate the events again...
